Is it worth upgrading to a bigger SSD?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have recently built myself a new desktop PC, just to be clear, these are the specs:

AsRock H97 Anniversary

Intel Core i5-4590 3.3 GHz (unfortunately locked but the coming back to FSX idea kind of came to me after I had bought it, otherwise I'd probably go for a K version)

MSI GeForce GTX960 2GB OC

8 GB RAM (1600 MHz)

CoolerMaster 3rd party CPU cooler

And now for my storage solution... I bought a 1 TB HDD and found an unused SSD (OCZ Vector 128 GB) at home. At that point, this seemed perfect but it only took Win 10, FSX and its add-ons to completely fill that SSD.

My question is, should I invest in the 256 GB SSD or should I just reinstall the whole thing to the neighbor HDD? Will I witness a huge setback if I choose the second option?

Currently, after some tweaking and pretty much all the standard "best buy" add-ons, I'm getting 30 fps (the ceiling) in smaller aircraft and 17-22 in for example PMDG T7 virtual cockpit, while looking forward.

I would be very thankful for every suggestion.

Thanks.

I wouldn't use an OCZ SSD for anything other than a coaster. Been there, done that, lost the data.

Cheers!

I make simFDR, the most advanced flight data recorder for FSX, Prepar3D and X-Plane.

I use an Intel ssd 240 gb for Win 10 and program installs and a Samsung ssd 250 gb 850 evo for P3Dv3. This seems to be working well so far.

I also mirror image backup both drives, daily. Best advice anyone could give a fellow flight simmer !!

Cheers

Steve

Regarding your storage,  the difference in a 250 gig and a 500 gig is only a couple of pounds/dollars.  Personally I would get the bigger storage and use it for other things as well.  You will get faster loading times with a SSD as well.

I believe I purchased the intel ssd nearly 3 years ago. Indeed much better prices now !

SSD gives you faster load times and prevents a few stutters when sound files are loaded. It doesn't give higher FPS though. Invest in a larger SSD is still my recommendation. I'm personally allergic to any computer that doesn't have an SSD as OS drive.
