DSR factors

Featured Replies

Bonjour,

I read  lot of things about the DX10 configuration, I found informations on forums, in guides.... and of course it led to play a lot with different parameters as the source I read doesn't say always the same things.

Of course I fought with blur, shimmer, and the different AA methods.

Now with a I7 4790K OC 4.6ghz and a GTX 780 I found the best configuration for my system is:

4X in the fixer, 4X Super Grid sampling in NVI, and a DSR factor of 4.00X.

I am sure that such a DSR factor is certainly too much, but for now, I did not see any problem. May be because 4X in the fixer and in SGSAA, are not too CPU and GPU agressive.

I understand that the AA algorithms are applied before the DSR process.

I have a question that could certainly be answered by  SteveFX.

The only way to get rid of almost all the shimmering is to have DSR factor to 4.00. if I put only 2.00 then the shimmering is here.

So my question is why is it like that ? I do not understand why a high DSR factor has the power to do this.

Best regards

Claude

I dont really know what to say, if I set dx9 and dx10 to the same AA settings then they look the same. I have never had a problem with shimmer in dx10 and don't use DSR, just 8xCsaa and 4 x sgssaa.

You don't have a non mipmapped grass detail texture do you, that is known to cause bad texture effects for terrain which could be reported as shimmer.

Any kind of rendering to a larger screen and downsampling will improve non mipmapped textures.

Thank you for the answer.

No I do not think I have particular grass texture.

The shimmer if very obvious and terrific on yellow runway hold bars, and also on vertical lines on building. The shimmer alsmost disappear once DSR factor is set to 4.00.

With DX9, I had 8xCSAA and 4 x SGSSAA. without such problems and I also found with DX9  that cockpit and external view was sharper.

May be the problem is related to REX and ORBX textures. I will check  taxiway_marks.dds this evening.

am sure that REX change the hold markings, but I do not know who is responsible of the buildings at the airport.

Merci

I restaure the standard FSX taxiway_marks.dds, and at a certain distance of the marks the shimmer is here as with the rex texture.

The only problem that I have been able to find so far is in DX9  where one of the hold lines did shimmer badly at one viewpoint.

Playing around I can only make it shimmer in DX10 by:

setting filtering to none rather than anisotropic in FSX settings

setting a largish negative LOD bias in NVI

(probably) altering anisotropic settings in NVI but I haven't tested that

Editing the shader header file to change texture sampling

Do your NVI settings exactly follow the DX10 How To Guide - or the page in the fixer manual?

Everything you describe sounds like a downsampling issue  i.e having no mipmaps or using the wrong mipmap or else a problem with texture filtering

Hello,

So.... When I choose to try DSR, I first find the sim was smoother. Why ? Really impossible to understand as DSR add stress to CPU and GPU.

I first follow the How to Guide, but it is said to disable AA in the fixer, and manage AA in the nvidia CP. It was not clear to me.

The different tests I made doesn't convince me because AA disable in the fixer mean AA disable in FSX. I think the idea is only to have no value for MultiSamplesPerPixel and MultiSampleQuality.
I re-enabled AA inside FSX option.

Just one thing I  noticed AA enable in FSX, with no  MultiSamplesPerPixel entry, no MultiSampleQuality entry is detected by the fixer as 4X ?? may be default value for DX10 in FSX ?

So I decide to follow the fixer guide, and try DSR as mention in codelegend.com (the ultimate setting)  with the problem I describe with the shimmer when DSR factor is not set to 4.0. Why is it the ultimate setting ?

Now I have reinstall the driver, new profile in CP and NVI, new fsx.cfg, no DSR and it is better. Not perfect but better.

What I have learned since my first fight (flight without l) with FSX (a long time ago), is that there are no rules. Everything get screwed with a incredible facility.

May be we can imagine a university with a Ph.D. in FSX. I am sure there are a lot to say on the subject....

Thanks Steve for helping me trying to understand.

Hello Claude

Sorry, your understanding on AA is all correct.   Yes 4x is default and yes the best thing is to set it in the fixer.

DSR 4x draws to a screen 4x the actual size and then reduces.  There are then 4 pixels for every pixel on your screen - this allows a more accurate determination of each pixel value than drawing at your actual screen size and antialiases the whole screen.
