March 5, 201610 yr Hi, About to take the plunge on a new build and after some advice. I will be using Prepar3d V3 exclusively so don't need it to be good for FSX or X Plane. The spec I have in mind is.. Intel i7 6700k overclocked to 4.5ghz MSI Z170 Motherboard 16GB DDR4 2400mhz Ram (2x8gb) MSI Nvidia 980ti 6GB Graphics Card 250GB SSD for Operating System 250GB SSD for Prepar3d and addons LG 29" Super Widescreen Monitor (already have this and love it) My question is, will I gain anything by going the X99 5820k route with it being 6 core? Am I making the right decision going Nvidia now? Based on AMD getting a lot better performance with DX12? Will P3D ever be updated to DX12 to take advantage of the better performance? If so, should I go AMD 8350 and hope for DX12? Any help really appreciated Matt
March 6, 201610 yr Hello, you will not gain 5820 versus 6700k, also do not forget the 6700k is DX12 capable. Only thing I would change from what you posted is memory to 2666. March 6, 201610 yr Commercial Member Hey Matt, Just curious... why have you already decided to overclock? Dave Hodges System Specs: I9-13900KF, NVIDIA 4070TI, Quest 3, Multiple Displays, Lots of TERRIFIC friends, 3 cats, and a wonderfully stubborn wife.
March 6, 201610 yr I'd recommend GSkill Ripjaw V or Trident Z. Top quality Samsung modules and specifically designed for Skylake. You'll find nipping the frequency up a tad won't cost you as much as you think. I went for Ripjaw V 3200 MHz. wasn't that expensive.
March 6, 201610 yr Author Hey Matt, Just curious... why have you already decided to overclock? Hi, I have always overclocked my CPU's and never had a problem so see it as extra performance with no negative effect. I don't massively overclock my CPU's so don't see any of the horror stories I see on the internet I'd recommend GSkill Ripjaw V or Trident Z. Top quality Samsung modules and specifically designed for Skylake. You'll find nipping the frequency up a tad won't cost you as much as you think. I went for Ripjaw V 3200 MHz. wasn't that expensive. Only thing I would change from what you posted is memory to 2666. Yeah will stick with the 6700k then as 5820 still going to be more than £100 more when I factor in the motherboard. I just thought quad channel ram might have given me a good amount of extra performance, that's the only reason i was thinking of the X99 platform.

I7-4790K is a good option if you want to save a few pounds while giving the 6700 a run for its money. Just throwing it out there. True, but then there's far more to Skylake than extra performance. Lots of other benefits. When buying a new PC, a significant investment, it usually makes sense to go for the latest platform. Cheers for the info. Will change the ram to one of them Don't just take my word for it though. March 7, 201610 yr Its actually finding somewhere that sells them that I would trust incase of RMA etc Give these guys a shout, they have an excellent reputation in the UK https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ If they do not have the tridents these are great as well and they do carry them: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/search?sSearch=+CMD16GX4M2B3200C16+ Regards,Gary Andersen HAF932 Advanced, ASUS Z690-P D4, i5-12600k @4.9,NH-C14S, 2x8GB DDR4 3600, RM850x PSU,Sata DVD, Samsung 860 EVO 1TB storage, W10-Pro on Intel 750 AIC 800GB PCI-Express,MSI RTX3070 LHR 8GB, AW2720HF, VS238, Card Reader, SMT750 UPS.

March 8, 201610 yr They dont stock them though as of yet I got my Ripjaw V's from Amazon. No problems. Lots in stock on Amazon. You shouldn't worry about RMA at Amazon, same process as anywhere else, and you do have Amazon themselves to assist you as well as the supplier. And also manufacturer themselves. I dare say you would be building your PC soon after the components arrive anyway, in which case it's a simple return if it's non functional on arrival. Most components go back to the manufacturer anyway if they fail at a later date. Scan is also good in the UK but based on my personal experience i wouldnt touch Aria or Ebuyer again for ANYTHING. Scan are good... usually. But unfortunately they recently let me down. They sent me a 700 quid monitor that was someone else's cast off. The box had been opened, a cable bag opened. When I fired it up the entire screen was shattered. It was definitely a returned monitor. The damage was either caused by the person who had it first, or in transit. No apology really either. Took just over two weeks before I got my money back. I expect to receive brand new goods not returned products. First time they've let me down in many years though. http://www.amazon.co.uk/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-F4-2666C15D-16GVR-GBx2-Memory/dp/B013J7LQYO/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1457429391&sr=8-7&keywords=Ripjaw+V http://www.amazon.co.uk/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-F4-3000C14D-16GVK-DDR4-Memory/dp/B01ACOD9N8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1457429288&sr=8-3&keywords=Ripjaw+V+3000 http://www.amazon.co.uk/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-F4-3200C14D-16GVK-DDR4-Memory/dp/B01ACODP7S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457429359&sr=8-1&keywords=Ripjaw+V+3200 http://www.amazon.co.uk/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-F4-2400C15D-16GVR-GBx2-Memory/dp/B013J7T5K6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457429391&sr=8-1&keywords=Ripjaw+V http://www.amazon.co.uk/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-F4-3000C15D-16GVR-GBx2-Memory/dp/B013J7L6BM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1457429391&sr=8-4&keywords=Ripjaw+V Looks like some of the stocks are low. Carphonewarehouse tried to give me a used iphone 6s plus. When i kicked off it had been handled, he looked at me as though to say "so?". I explained in the best way , i wasn't paying literally thousands over 2yrs on a contract to have a used phone. I fired up Prepar3d V3 today with my other PC (Pentium K overclocked to 4.5ghz, 8GB DDR3 Ram, Nvidia GTX 970) and you know what , it ran bloody lovely. Everything on max apart from draw distance was at half and i was getting 65-70fps at LOWI Innsbruck and was still getting mid 40's at Manchester and Gatwick. Fired up X Plane 10 and was getting about 52fps at LOWI Innsbruck and 35ish at Manchester and Gatwick. Thats both with no addons so dont know how much REX and Active Sky etc would drag them fps down? Will i see a drastic increase going with the 6700k and 980ti?

Cheeky devils! Will i see a drastic increase going with the 6700k and 980ti? I don't know much about your Pentium K, is that the G3258? If so, 40% faster the 6700K. Plus a boost from the 980Ti. http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-G3258-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700K/2434vs3502
