October 14, 200520 yr I posted this in Scenery Design where it probably is most suitable; however, not everyone visits that forum so I thought it should be placed here as well for wider disemination. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index...5&siteID=123112I couldn't find any coverage of this topic here or flightsim.com.It is being discussed at a couple of other support forums for programs which use Gmax like Neverwinternights and Trainz. It would be interesting to hear Microsoft's take and the impact upon future versions of FS.Apparently, one may encounter problems registering the program, even if you own a previous legal copy, especially when reformating or installing new HD. This may even apply at the TurboSquid website.
October 14, 200520 yr It's been mentioned on Simflight. There the response was that Microsoft is aware of the situation and working on a solution.Of course as long as the fileformat doesn't change you can continue to use your version, only getting a nagscreen if you need to reinstall.I've never seen it fail to load after that, and all it adds is a single mouseclick.
October 14, 200520 yr The ACES team at MS is well aware of this situation, and have been in contact with Autodesk on working out a solution for the future. The ACES team is VERY committed to providing the 3rd party community with the appropriate tools to develop enhancements to their core product.http://blogs.technet.com/pixelpoke/archive.../07/412185.aspxFrom what I understand, Gmax will still be available at TurboSquid. We just cannot expect a future update beyond the 1.2 version we have access to now.Regards,Owen *****
J. October 14, 200520 yr Wonder if they would continue to allow people to activate/re-activate current versions..... May not get any more new versions of gmax, but might still have full installation & activation of existing versions... :) Press release doesn't say anything about discontinuing activations/registrations of existing versions of GMax.....Maybe Microsoft will be able to work a deal with Autodesk.. October 14, 200520 yr I suggest to keep on reading it. I'm sure what you will read will lend itself well to anything else that will come along in the future.Regards,Owen *****
J. October 15, 200520 yr How come is Discreet eliminating gmax for future versions? It looks like the Autodesk you have to pay for now? Maybe in the future they will create a freeware version similar to gmax?
October 15, 200520 yr Author Moderator This has been one of the topics de jour for nearly a week in the "Aircraft & Panel Design" forum right here at good 'ol AVSIM... ;)Here's the poop straight from Turbo Squid:"Since Turbo Squid is a valuable partner for Autodesk and we've been managing the product and community on their behalf for the past year, they've allowed us to continue to offer the Gmax download until November 1st so that we can effectively manage the transition for this now defunct product. At that point, the ability to download Gmax from our site will be removed as will the ability for users to get authorization codes for the product."Those who alread have GMax installed, make a backup copy of your Windows Registry! Your registration information is in there and may be reused should you need to reinstall for any reason... ;) Fr.
