Dual sound, is it possible?

Featured Replies

Several sound issues have been bugging me for a long time.In the 'Cathy Pacific' 744 video, the captain and first officer have headsets with their opposing headphone parked on the side of their heads so that they can hear each other and the connected ear is listening to ATC.In our simulations you hear everything through the same speakers, whether they are headphones or speaker's. This causes so many problems within FS.Is it possible to seperate the two sound facilities and what hardware or alterations would be nessacery for doing this?Thanking you all, in advance for any constructivecomments.Dave T. .........On the Devon Riviera and active 'FlightSim User's Group' member at http://www.flightsimgrpuk.free-online.co.uk/

This is quite easy, you just need a USB microphone headset. Plantronics make very good ones at a reasonable price. When flying online I always have ATC through the headphones and the aircraft and sim sounds through the speakers.Have a look at www.dabs.com and do a search for plantronics. They have my one, the Plantronics DSP400, for just over

But there is more to it than that right? This is something I've been wanting to do myself, and I already have a USB Plantronics headset. The way it works on my comp is I have the front channel sounds routed into my headset and the rear channel sounds come out of my rear channel speakers, but even with this setup the ATC and plane sounds can be heard through both.Derek D.

Derek,I think what Rob refers to is flying on-line with VATSIM where it provides the source of ATC. You can separate the the audio (voice) coming from VATSIM by using proprietary software such as Squawkbox3 or FSInn and the engine and environment sounds of FS9 would be directed to the default Windows sound device. SB3 and FSInn have configurable options which allow you to tell the program where to send the audio. The USB headset will appear to be another sound card to either program. You can also configure the settings in the Sounds and Audio Devices in Windows Control Panel and redirect the sounds there. If you were asking if the default ATC within FS9 could be split from the engine/environment sounds, I don't believe that can be done.Jimhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/pmdg_pf.jpg

You don't even need a USB headset. If you have a PCI soundcard as well as the sound on your motherboard, well, there you go. Just set it up the same way. Headset on one, FS sound on another.

What I would like to know is if you can have sidetone in the headset. What I mean is so you can hear yourself talk so you know how loud to talk. I think with older headsets that were analog you could do this. My USB one cannot as far as I know.

Mike,This won't always be possible. On the last 2 motherboards I've had, when you plug in a soundcard the onboard sound is automatically disabled.RegardsAdrian

Has anyone got experience of the GoFlight headset unit? Is it any good?IanIn sunny Bournemouth

It does a decent job. With the squelch setting and while in cockpit view you pretty much only hear the ATC voices, occasionally you may hear some other sounds but not too often. Some aircraft if you are in external view you can hear all sounds. Both ATC and normal sounds still come out of your speakers in either case. Using the knob for your ATC window open/close and selection is handy and frees up any buttons you may have assigned for these functions. Best prices that I have found for GoFlight stuff is here: http://www.digital-flight.com/Bud
