December 19, 200520 yr I was setting up a flight from Miami to Kingston, Jamaica and suddenly was hit with a dilemma: Are US airlines allowed overflight of Cuba? I didn't think so, but was not sure. It makes about a 200 nm difference on that particular trip. Mike
December 19, 200520 yr my understanding is that there is a reciprocal arrangement which allows cuban flights over the continental u.s to destinations in canada...and u.s. flights over cuban territory to caribbean destinations. so, go ahead and do it. the worst that can happen is that you will be shot down...:-)Sherm
December 19, 200520 yr MIkeCivilian acft , including airliners, normally use either the Girdon Corridor (G448/UG448) or the Nuevas Corridor (B505/UB503). The Nuevas track takes u over the eastern end of Cuba. The Girdon track takes u over the west-central section of Cuba, just east of Havana.US military acft are not permitted transit over Cuba, or at least not when I was flying. Military acft must circumnavigate the island via either the Yucatan Straits or Windward Passage.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/135979.jpg
December 19, 200520 yr Thanks, that helps! I tend to do more Caribbean destinations as winter settles in the northeast. Wishful thinking! ;-) Mike
December 19, 200520 yr MikePerhaps I should do that too. I've been hauling cargo around Russia and the CIS's for 3 wks now and almost every other flight is with low vis & snow not to mention rather 'cool' temps.:-8http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/135984.jpg
December 19, 200520 yr Flown over Cuba a few times on the way to the Cayman Islands. It's a big Island
December 19, 200520 yr AlexFor the runs less than about 3 hrs I've been using my C-130H. Right now I'm sitting in Penza, Russia and will return to Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport tomorrow AM. There I pick up our DC-8-71F for a run to Ala-Ata (Almaty) in Kazakhstan. After Almaty I have several stops in south central Russia, north of Mongolia. Never a dull moment.;-)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/136008.jpg
December 20, 200520 yr Author Mike,There are corridors to overfly Cuba. That being said, the Cubans can and do occasionally say no to overflights on a moments notice just to be a PIA. As I understand it, AA will not overfly Cuba. I've done it a couple of times in corporate aircraft without incident. It comes from good authority that the missiles that the virtual Migs fire are duds! :-) Happy landings, Mike Eppright (KAAO)
