Request intersection departure from ATC

Hello again,

 

I'm wondering when you need to request your intersection departure from ATC? Do you request it together with your taxi clearance for example "XXX123 request taxi to X2" instead of just "request taxi", or do you just normally request taxi and when you get handed over to tower, ask for an intersection takeoff?

Hi...

 

This may vary with geographic location and the size of the tin you are pushing - but - typically - ATC tells you which intersection if they want you to take one (the most logical) - you could request one from "ground" with your taxi clearance if you really wanted a specific one - also many pilots may decline the intersection and request the whole runway as there have been fatalities associated with intersection departures that may have been averted had more runway been available...

If you are flying PMDG size aircraft,  the take-off performance is calculated using whole runway length, so you would need to consider this and adjust your derates accordingly if deciding on an intersection.
