Another "What Should I do?"

Featured Replies

Well here is another one of those “what should I get” posts. My system is about 3 years old now and 3 years ago, I knew quite a bit about the PC and could do a lot better than I am doing right now. My specs are below and I have been running XP10 since I built this computer with pretty high settings around 25 FPS. Long story short, I am now running two sims in XP10/11 and P3Dv3. I have been enjoying p3d more and more now so I would like to upgrade my computer with that sim in mind instead of XP.

I am currently running p3d with a few A2A aircraft, AS16, and WAMA. Nothing else installed except for a FSEconomy plugin for tracking. I would like to add ORBX scenery to the mix since I’m constantly flying low and slow but I am afraid my system will not carry the load. Especially when overcast clouds or thunderstorms pop up.

Any advice here will be appreciated. I have a good stable PC but I would like to upgrade it in the areas needed to run p3dv3, A2A & Carenado, AS16, and ORBX on pretty high settings, 30+FPS. Possible?

Thanks!

Derrick

Overclock current CPU as far as possible and get a gtx 1070.  FSX based some typically do better with nvidia cards.  Your system is pretty good but what is your current overclock?

4.3 on the CPU is all I could do stable. It is the highest preset over clock in my bios. Anything above that, im sure my computer can handle, but I don't have the knowledge to take it further. Anytime I tried to do 4.4 or 4.5 manually it crashed constantly.

Would the 1070 be preferred over the 1080? The 1080s have come down below 500 now that the it is out so I was looking at them.

The 1080 is still faster but imo, overkill, unless you're on 4K monitor.  P3D STILL needs the fastest CPU you can get.  A new Z270 board and 7700K with a gtx 1070 would be a good investment

Thanks for the advice Ryan. I haven't done much research on boards or CPUs as from what I've read, mine are still decent. But all of my research that I have found has not been geared toward P3D specifically so I have taken it all with a grain of salt and the reason I am asking here. Seems like a fast 4 core would be better than my 6 core for P3D?

If I decided to go with a 7700k and a 1070, could I stay with the same motherboard?

Need a new mobo unfortunately

as for CPU - the faster clock speed the better.  Cores still don't do much for P3D.  Maybe 64bit will be different but I'm not sure when it's coming.

Which one isn't compatible with the motherboard? The CPU I'm assuming?

Ok thank you. I have been doing more research on over locking so I may give it a try again on my CPU and see if I can get above 4.3 stable this time. If I cook it... I'll force my upgrade sooner than later lol
