Small plane crash on major freeway in Southern California

I think they are related, losing an engine on takeoff and crashing on trying to land....??

By the time he crashed, the fact that he lost the engine during takeoff was totally irrelevant.  Ancient history.  None of the things being belabored here by people about losing an engine on takeoff were a factor in this accident, as proven by the the fact that the plane had flown crosswind, downwind, and base legs already by the time it crashed.  He could have lost that engine in climb, cruise or descent just as well, given where that plane ended up.  The primary reason he crashed was not because the plane couldn't climb on takeoff, it was because he flew a short approach on landing.  That plane was perfectly capable of flying, as evidenced by the video, it was just the pilot that crashed it because of his state of mind.  A mind that was unready for a malfunction, undisciplined in his handling of an abnormality, and rushing into an unstable landing approach.  The plane crashed from panic, not the engine failure on takeoff.

I agree Kevin. My original statement was based upon the supposition that he immediately tried to turn back - which we know now that he did not.
