Installing addon scenery in a secondary HD or different partition

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried this? I bet someone has ;).I will receive a FX55 in the next days. I was wondering if it is possible to do so when I reinstall XP and FS . If it is possible, even though I have a WD 200 Gb that could be partitioned very well, I guess that the best option is to install in a secondary HD (I can attach a WD 80GB as a slave). My idea is to have the secondary disk (or partition) exclusively for heavy addons such as Megascenery or any other photorealistic stuff.Just want to hear opinions. What would it work the best? What would allow textures to load faster? Will an 550 Kw PSU be enough to deal with a FX55, two HDs and a 6800 GT?Thanks,Leo

I have all mine on a network computer on a 80gig.Its ok but the computer must be running when flying - I just tried it as an experiment, u can literally put it where u wish.

I think if you install it on a network drive, the scenery library will enable local HD caching of the scenery. I suppose you could turn this off in scenery.cfg. You might want to do the same with with a USB connected drive or other storage device. scott s..

i guess you could try it, though honestly, i don't think it will change much. now if you do have a second drive, install it on the other bus and put the swap file on it, fixing its size to twice your physical memory--you may be quite pleased with the result(the assumption is that you have your operating system and FS executables on the primary drive)

That is how I have mine set up. I have a 120gb hard drive with the os and fs2004 and a 300 gig with all my photographic sceneries.

I once thought of setting up a scenery folder over the internet, the idea being that as scenery files were updated (i.e., bugs fixed), then users would see the results automatically. Of course, this would only be useful to those of us with DSL/cable/etc. and there wouldn't be any advantage in terms of speed. Also, it would make it easier to beta-test scenery, an could possibly free up a lot of hard drive space on users computers. But, if the scenery files were too big, it would cause the scenery to be loaded too slowly, I think.Still, it's just an idea, and one day I'll try it out just to see if it works.- Martin

Back to the original topic - Yes, it is possible to install your scenery on separate drives. My own experience and knowledge is based on folklore, but I do believe that you can increase your performance by doing this. It is my understanding that you are correct that you will be better off putting them on a separate drive, as opposed to a separate partition on the same disk. I have read that Megascenery suggests you not only put their sceneries on a separate drive, but also at the root directory, e.g.D:MSNY---->Scenery---->TextureI've often wondered if you are better off partitioning a very large drive as a single partition, or as multiple partitions. I have read both ways with convincing arguments. I prefer as a single large partition as this is easier to manage, but I understand this can waste disk space and performance. At the prices of disks these days, though, wasted disk space is not the issue it once was. Any thoughts on this subject?Thomas[a href=http://www.flyingscool.com/FC_StartJava.html] http://www.flyingscool.com/images/Signature.jpg [/a]I like using VC's :-)

Thanks for all the replies. It seems that is the way I will go as soon as I get the new processor. One more question, does anyone know if it is possible to format a HD without installing windows in it. I have tried to do so with a slave, but it doesn't let me do it, so I end up formatting with a windows installation, which BTW is using a chunk of space that could be free. Thanks again,Leo

Use the WINME startup floppy disk - if u have a floppy drive these days.U can format it in FAT32 only though.Take a look here:http://www.bootdisk.com/
