FSUIPC and AIrcraft Specific

Featured Replies

I have been using the CH software with their controlers, creating a 'map' for each aircraft type, and using FSUIPC to fine-tune them (and do other things). It's been recommended that I try the CH controlers without their software.I know there is an Aircraft Specific option in FSUIPC but that seems to apply to the livery that I'm flying at the time, rather than the base aircraft. Is there anyway to setup an aircraft in FSUIPC so that all liveries will take on the same controls?

I recommend that you keep using the CH software, even with only one map. It provides for smoother more calibrated levers and you can logically define more buttons on the TQ. This is how I've been running setup for a while now. Now, with the newest beta version of FSUIPC (registered), availabile at the top of Pete Dowson's support forum, you now have the ability to define aircraft-specific axis definitions much like aircraft-specific button definitions that it has provided for a while. I edited the heck out of my fsuipc.ini file and have generic calibration, buttons, & axis definitions for each different type of aircraft model (not livery). I.e, single, twins, FS1-ATR, PMDG 737, PMDG 747, etc. The trick is, after creating your first set of definitions for a given type of aircarft, manually edit the FSUIPC.ini file and duplicate and edit the section for another aircraft model type. Edit the section name to be more generic so it'll pickup all livery types for a given model. For example, if the seciton in the ini file has "PMDG 747-400 Delta Airllines" edit this back to "PMDG 747-" so it'll pickup all liveries. You have to add or a change a keyword to "yes" in the FSUIPC.ini file to allow shorter section names. I think it's something like "allowshortnames=yes" but please look in the FSUIPC help doc, as I can't look it up at the moment. Once you have one or two complete sections for calibration, axis, and buttons, for one model; to add a new aircraft just copy the entire set of three sections and rename to the new aircraft model type and change the entries.Warning, to use shortnames to encompase multiple liveries properly, you will have to go through each aircraft.cfg file for which you are setting up a FSUIPC short-name section and make sure the titile of each livery begins with what you've specified for each section title in the FSUIPC.ini file. You'll be amazed at how inconsistant the titles are even for a single aircraft model type. Notepad search & replace function works good for this but take your time and check each "replace" and also backup your aircraft.cfg file before editing, just in case.Tricks; 1) On one of the calibration pages in the FSUIPC GUI, flaps I think, it'll show you what FSUIPC thinks the current aircraft's full livery title is in the bottom right-hand corner of the page. If this entry doesn't begin with the same short-name section in FSUIPC, aircraft specific configs won't be applied. 2) Backup your FSUIPC.ini file often. After you've spent a couple of hours editing this file, customizing sections for each model type, you don't want to loose this work by hitting the "reset" button in FSUICP GUI. 3) I think the "aircraft specific" checkbox will be checked on the calibration page if the current aircaft's title matched a short-name section in the the FSUIPC GUI but the buttons and axis assignment pages will not have this same box checked even thought it is in fact matching a short-name section. 4) PMDG aircraft, get the key commands set the way you want in the PMDG "keyboard" menu first then assign these same key combinations in the buttons assignments in FSUIPC. 5) using the FSUIPC GUI calibration page (top), write down which controller is being assigned which number as interpretted by FSUIPC. This will come in handy for referencing and changing controller numbers by hand in FSUIPC.ini fileIf you wish, I can post samples from my FSUIPC.ini file tonight after work. I don't have my rig in front of me at the moment but this is basically what I've accomplished in the last few months since the new AXIS specific section was added to the FSUIPC GUI. Good luck and I hope this info helps.... Al

Gulp! That's a lot to get my head round, so "I'll have to get back to you on that":-) Do you fly the ATR? If you do you'll know that they specifically say not to use CH software.Anyway, I'll read through what you said and have a closer look at FSUIPC, but this may take a while before I understand. Thanks, and keep an eye out.

Yea, it took me a while to figure it out on my own, by pouring through the docs and a few forum questions to Pete. As for the ATR, yes I own it, it is configured in FSUIPC, but I haven't flown it in a long time due to the PMDG 747's coming out this year. I can't imagine why they say disable CH software, maybe specific maps setup specifically for their aircraft? Doesn't sound logical. I for one, wouldn't disable it.Al

I gave up on the CH Manager since I learned from a tutorial by David Roch that taught me how to create multiple CFG files for FS9 (file: MULTIPLE FS9.EXE: do it yourself! NO TOOL!). Each CFG is programmed with the functions I want for each AC, and I select the profile for the particular AC I want to fly on starting FS9. When the "Select Flight" window appears I choose the proper plane and livery I wish to use. While I can only program the 12 buttons on the CH throttle quad for 12 different functions, that is plenty for me. I wouldn't be able to remember more if I tried. In fact, I printed out a chart of the button functions for each AC and attach it to the top of the quad behind the levers with a couple of pieces of velcro. On switching AC, I change the chart so I know which button performs which function. I also have the registered version of FSUIP which can help fine tune some functions. The different CFG's sure increased my joy in flying since I dreaded having to reprogram my quad if I wanted to fly a different AC. The CH software just didn't do it for me.I hope you find what works best for you.

FWIW, I used to use multiple FS9 config files too but I found that making a change to one config file usually required the same change in all the other FS9 config file copies. If I wanted to change the dispaly resolution for one type of aircraft after installing a new video card for example, I then had to make the same change in the other copies of the FS9 config file. That's why I decided to go with all the different sections in the single FSUIPC.ini file and a single FS9 config file. Making changes later became a whole lot easier to manage...Al

I replaced brackets with parens. Forum doesn't display brackets.OK, here's my FSUIPC.ini file with aircraft-specific sections. The frist section are the generic options for FSUIPC itself. Just as I did below, you'll need to change "ShortAircraftNameOk=No" (default) to "ShortAircraftNameOk=Yes" for short-names to match the beginning of aircraft titles in their respective aircraft.cfg files. The Next three sections are the default buttons, axis, and calibrations for any aircraft not specifically matched in sections below them. Then, there are a set of three sections, buttons, axis, and calibrations for each type of aircraft model for which I wanted to a have different CH setup of for. For example, the first three aircraft specific sections is for the Beach Baron. So any aircraft loaded with a title beginning with "Beach Baron" will get these sections applied. Careful, spaces in title names do matter. Oh, and anything not specifically defined in a short-name section will be taken from the default buttons, axis, or calibrations sections near the top. Also notice in each of the buttons sections, you are allowed to append a comment at the end of each entry. This save a lot of headache when matching special key sequences like on the PMDG aircraft. Comments must begin with a semi-colan with a max of 64 characters, if I remember correctly.I run a basic mapped-mode file for the CH software defining one logical device for the Yoke, one logical device for the pedals, and two logical devices for the Throttle-quad. Grab a soda, beer or coffee and read the FSUIPC advanced users doc. It'll explain the various entries in each section. If it then still doesn't make sense, drop me line.(General)History=AI3IZ77QBLFO4DQD4UN7KTCASid=FlightTCASrange=0TrafficScanPerFrame=10AxisCalibration=NoCentredDialogue=NoClearWeatherDynamics=YesOwnWeatherChanges=NoWeatherReadInterval=4MoveBGLvariables=YesTimeForSelect=4WeatherReadsFast=NoMainMenu=&ModulesSubMenu=&FSUIPC Double 'Gulp!'It looks scary but it's probably not that bad: I've never opened the FSUIPC .ini so I had no idea what to expect.ilovetofly wrote "I hope you find what works best for you." The setup I have works fine. There is continuous and rigorous advice from the developer in the ATR forum not to use the CH software because of rogue inputs, spikes and uneven responses, some of which I have experienced: but by the same token even after equally continuous requests from ATR customers the developers have not seen fit to issue a patch/adapt the coding or whatever to allow us to use the Quad to adjust the Power Levers.I then recieved a friendly suggestion from flyers, and the developer, of the Aeroworx Super King Air to try it without the CH software. So here I am, 95% content with the way things are working, but wondering if I shouldn't heed the suggestions to try it without CH'ware. But after all your hard work posting here, I wonder if I REALLY need to go to all that trouble.Thank you - there's no doubt about that - and I'll give all this a good look. (This might just be a case for twin FS9 installations: one the way it is, another the 'new' way: I can keep flying while I figure out the alternative.)So, "I'll get back to you on that" :-)

I can't figure out why they recommend not to use CH software. If you look at the calibration inputs using your FSUIPC GUI calibration page, the inputs are much smoother, repeatable, and don't spike while on CH software. As indicated above, I get the sam min/max calibration points whereby without the CH software, the min/max can vary by a couple of hundred units depending on time. This is especially true when using CH mapped-mode whereby the yoke, pedal, & TQ become logical devices 1, 2, & 3 using a map in the CH Contral manager.. The only thing I can't think of would be if you issues with your USB circuitry and/or driver.Good luck...Al
