Project Canarias 2006 - Replacing default airports

Featured Replies

Hi. There have been, I noticed, several people asking about replacing the now very bare-looking default airports left out (so far) of the Canarias 2006 scenery. This is possible and to good effect. Firstly, please see what I wrote in an earlier thread:------------------------------------"All the default airports can be replaced with Toni Agramont's Canaries scenery - flightsim.com - search for canary04.zip. (You need to register on the site). You need Nova & NovaGold textures for these airports to work (freely available).Much of the download as it stands will not work with the Canarias 2006 scenery of course - which is a pity, because (like in his excellent Morocco scenery) Toni clearly went to a great deal of trouble with this (have a look at the texture folder in the above zip file to see what I mean!). Hopefully, Project Canarias will slowly (or rapidly, even better!) fill in all the remaining airports themselves, but at the moment canary04.zip provides a huge improvement to the default airports."------------------------------------I have spent some hours editing the bgl files in canary04.zip so that they fit into the new Canarias 2006 scenery. I have tried to contact Toni to ask permission, but to no avail. I gladly acknowledge that 99% of the work here is his, not mine, and hope that there would be no problem in my giving his files a new lease of life, as it were, in conjunction with Canarias 2006. As I say, the files as they stand make quite a mess of the new scenery. The smaller airports are not worth touching, because by the time you take out all the problems there is not much left to look at! I have however edited all the major airports (apart from GCLA of course!!) and I now get lots of nice airport scenery (lots of nice topical scenery in Lanzarote & Fuerteventura too), with few if any conflicts with Canarias 2006. I have also made a set of bgl files excluding the static traffic, for people with their own AI aircraft. If enough people post back here with a 'yes', I'll upload all my files to the AVSIM library. (Objections duly noted too). Otherwise, I'll just enjoy them here all by myself :-) ...And finally, once again (as with his Morocco scenery which I patched up several months back and made available), many thanks to Toni Agramont for his great work on these sceneries.Martin

Sure. I would say yes. I have had a big problem with not being able to use the gps anymore in the area. The aircraft tracks in the wrong direction.I would definitely download the files if you upload them (especially the no-static ones).

Well it wouldn't take me long to do so. I'm just a bit 'iffy' about uploading someone else's files that I have tweaked without the original author's permission. I did go through this before posting my updates to Toni's Morocco scenery however (couldn't trace Toni - his e-mail address didn't work: anyone know if he is around?), and I think that as I have given all the credit to him, there shouldn't really be an 'ethical' problem! Anyone who thinks there is, please post your opinions ASAP.I am still flying around the islands testing what I have done - just a couple of places left to go and (as far as I can see) everything works really well. It's especially good to have Lanzarote & Fuerteventura covered with scenery.. Don't know about your GPS problem - it works OK for me. Maybe these files will fix things for you.Anyone who wants my updates then, look out on the AVSIM forum, later tonight or possibly tomorrow - depends on whether I come across any serious errors in what I have done. (I should say that where buildings just very slightly overhang a cliff, for instance, say by 5% or less, I have left them. It takes me for ever to search the decompiled bgl to find the exact entry where the problem is - and I am just not that patient I'm afraid!! If the overall effect is good to my eyes, I've left it. :-)Martin

Hi there Martin,I just downloaded your new file and added it to the already great Canarias VFR scenery. It's certainly a great improvement. No buildings in the sea anymore etc. etc. O.K. there are still some houses sticking out of cliffs here and there especially along one side of the Los Rodeos (GCXO) runway but one only sees those when flying very specific test flights e.g. with a helicopter or Cessna. Therefore, no problem at all. I'm sure Toni Agramont will agree with your tweaks because they only adjust his already fantastic work in a very specific manner for the sole purpose of vastly improving the overall Canarias flying experience AND by keeping it freeware. All we need now are improvements to the other Canarias airports in the La Palma fashon in order to make this wonderful scenery a total and complete experience. It's guys like you, Toni Agramont, the Canarias team and all those other truly gifted developers who keep guys like me flying and enjoying this wonderful hobby.Friendly regardsHansHollandP4 3.0Ghz. Thanks for the kind words, Hans! Glad you like my updates. The Canarias 2006 scenery is some of the best I have ever added to my FS9 setup, so it was a labour of love adding to it in this way.I included a file to exclude buildings sticking out of the side of the cliff at GCHI, but missed GCXO - I am notorious for my lack of visual acuity! I'll go and have a look a bit later. If I get a few corrections like this, I will upload them to AVSIM as a 'supplement to the supplement'. Those who have installed my files, please do let me know here if you find any more oddities like this - even if you know how to recompile bgls and fix them yourself, as I can then make this little upload as complete as possible. Who know how long its 'shelf life' will have to be?Martin

Hans, I looked and looked but couldn't see any buildings where they shouldn't be at GCXO. Maybe you could post exact co-ordinates?M.

Hi Martin,Again I say that some (autogen) houses and/or buildings which are partially hanging in the air or sticking out the sides of cliffs are only very minor details which in my opinion do not require any further work to resolve, but here's two example coordinates as per your request anyway:At GCXO: N28 28.87 W16 19.78At GCHI: N27 48.51 W17 53.16The GCXO airport at the beginning of runway 30, seems to be on a kind of plateau (Alt: 2073 ft.) with cliffs around it which caused me to extensively scout around in my system for some kind of flatten switch or separate mesh scenery covering that area but I could find none. So I assume this must be reality. However, please do not regard my comments as critism on your wonderful piece of work and that of all the other developers involved.RegardsHans

I'll look into it, even if for my own satisfaction. I regard your comments as constructive criticism! i.e. - welcome.M. :-)

Hans,I was looking at the sea cliff at GCXO before - I see what you mean now, at the side of the runway. It's very hard to put a flatten switch there as the co-ordinate is right next to the runway - though it could be done with care! As you say, it's a small error though so I think I'll let that one pass!I honestly can't see any problems at GCHI - the buildings on my setup all sit nicely on the sloping hill. Maybe we have different terrain mesh installed, or some other difference in our FS9 setup is causing this?Best wishes,Martin

BTW - there USED to be buildings in the cliff there, but I made an exclusion bgl for them, included in the download (GCHI_Exc.bgl - logically enough!). If you don't have that in your scenery folder you will get buildings sticking out of the cliff. But I assume you didn't mean that, as that error, when not corrected, sticks out like a sore thumb...M.

Hi there Martin,I spent quite some time flying around the Canaries in combination with your revised (Toni Agramont's) VFR scenery files and was looking for something substantial to complain about but alas, no such luck !! I now regret bringing up the whole exceptionally minor subject of a few houses sticking out of cliffs here and there.By the way. What program do you use to (de-)compile and examine the contents of existing .bgl files and where can I find it ? I quite often encounter a.o. FSNavigation conflicts when AFCAD information is included in scenery.bgl files and have been looking for a way to delete this kind of information when it's already covered by a separate and dedicated AFCAD (AF2..) file. Moreover, this kind of AFCAD duplication is a known cause of system freezes and crashes.RegardsHans

Hans, I use BGLAnalyze v3.1 and NewBGLAnalyze (latter for FS9 XML type files). A Google search will find sites from which they can be downloaded e.g. http://www.scenery.orgYou need SCASM 2.85 and/or BGLCOMP_SDK to recompile, depending on the bgl file format. Again, they are easily found online with a search.Editing using these tools means cutting out objects from the sca/xml file and recompiling it using a command line. I obviously can't give you a detailed tutorial here, but it really is not all that hard once you get the hang of it. It is time consuming though finding the right lines in the file to delete, especially for scenery objects. (Static aircraft have a recognisable signature, so are much easier). That said, you should only ever have one AFCAD for each airport in your setup, (unless one is specifically for something very specific, traffic signs or similar), so you shouldn't really be editing one of them (if I understood you correctly), you should be archiving it away somewhere (just in case) and then deleting it from FS2004. A great tool, if you don't have it already, is ScanAFD, which will list all your AFCADs and show where there are multiple bgl files that can create problems. Search for scanafd.zip on the ASVSIM file library.Hope this helps.Martin

I think I misread you on this - you weren't talking about 2 AFCADs, so please disregard my (unintentionally) patronising comment!M. :-)
