April 30, 200620 yr The announcement of the new Napulevola LIRN 2006 scenery prompted me to download it, and I look forward to trying it out in the sim. However I feel users should be aware of the following. The scenery comes with an automatic installer which modifies a couple of files in the FS2004SceneryEURW folder. Whilst a backup for FL951170.bgl is created the file AP951170.bgl is backed up as AB951170.bgl.bakI think that it would be helpful if this change was detailed in the installation notes as many users don't like their systems being modified behind the scenes in this way, especially as it may affect other addons such as Ultimate Terrain: Europe.I only picked up on this action due to my general suspicion of automatic installers and my policy of installing to a temporary folder in these cases. As the airport scenery has to be manually added to the scenery list (scenery.cfg) anyway, if users do have UT-Europe installed I would recommend that they also install to a temporary folder and assess the impact of the EURW changes.Note that the ISD LIRF2005 scenery also modifies AP951170.bgl and creates its own backup folder within SceneryEURWAlastair
April 30, 200620 yr Yes I agree that it would be good to have prior warning of such mods to files in FS which is why I adopt your policy of manually installing everything I put into FS except trusted payware. Having said that LIRN 2006 is well worth getting. A nice detailed airport and surrounds entirely free, thanks to the generosity of some dedicated designers, like wise ISD's LIRF and their other sceneries. Many thanks to both.
April 30, 200620 yr Hi Both,I was just thinking of downloading this great looking scenery, but I'm glad that I visit these forums every day now,I was wondering what happens if we install to a separate temp folder,(which like you, I always do) and get rid of the FL951170.bgl and AP951170.bgl as I use Ultimate Terrain Europe as well as GE by Peter and Anthony.would it be detrimental to the scenery itself if I got rid of the two files mentioned above.?many thanks,
April 30, 200620 yr Hi Steve,Installing to a temp folder (my "main" FS2004 folder is H:FS9 and I use G:FS9 for my temp folder) results in the following:FS9Addon SceneryNapuleVola_LIRN_2005 folder (with subfolders for Documentation, Scenery & Texture)FS9Addon SceneryScenery (with a few bgl and text files)FS9Addon SceneryTexture (with 21 bmp files)FS9SceneryeurwScenery folder (with 2 BGL files and 2 bgl.bak files)Thus you can move the LIRN folder to where you have your addon scenery files (if this is not FS2004Addon Scenery) and move/overwrite the files from the other folders to their appropriate folders within FS2004. The LIRN scenery needs to be added to your scenery listing as well.Personally I'm holding off on the installation until I understand what the files I'll be replacing (in the EURW folder) actually do.The FLxx files are Flattening files, and are likely to be appropriate for the new airport scenery, but I'm unsure of the function of the ABxx and APxx files. To install to a temp folder, run the Installer (which should locate your FS2004 folder automatically) but instead of accepting the default FS2004 destination, manually select the temp folder you want to use. By keeping the default, parent folder (in my case G:FS9 rather than H:FS9) the same you can see where in the actual FS2004 folder the files will be placed.Alastair
April 30, 200620 yr Hi,I just installed it.I had the previous version already and also I made my own backups of those bgls ( I think they made an error there as one marked backup was different to the one being installed AB/APxxxxxx ).It is excellent and I love flying that area ( used to live in Sorrento, so I know it well)... especially if you add the photoreal and napoli city stuff as well - all linked from the same site.It doesn't seem to interfere with my UT europe either - Although I keep that on a higher scenery level so the roads are on top of the photoreal stuff.Cheers,PaulOnly minor quibble is the blue taxi lights are a tad too bright.
April 30, 200620 yr Author Ok I just installed it to a temp folder and looked in the scenery/Eurw folder and did not see a backup for AP951170.bgl. I did go to the default scenery after I installed LIRN to a temp folder and everything is still good.I did un-install the LIRN after I moved it (the temp folder I installed the scenery in was on the C drive, then I copied it to the D drive, then I un-installed the one on the C drive) so maybe the backup bgl file was deleted?Im going to install this scenery in a little while and see if I have any elevation problems.
April 30, 200620 yr Hi Joseph,The installer creates these files in the SceneryeurwScenery folder:AB951170.bgl.bak 22/5/2003 (default file backup)AP951170.BGL 27/4/2006FL951170.bgl 27/4/2006FL951170.bgl.bak 31/5/2005 (backup of modified default file)Normally these files would be written into your Scenery folder, overwriting the 2 middle files that already exist. To duplicate the actions of the installer you should do this manually, but I suggest you back up the existing APxx and FLxx files just in case.Alastair
April 30, 200620 yr Author Ok I downloaded it again and installed it to a temp folder and this time I did get those AP and FL files, but since I installed it to a temp folder those files did not overwrite anything in my FS folders.I think the first time I downloaded the wrong LIRN scenery.
