Weather & Visibility Settings

Featured Replies

I find that when flying at medium to high altitudes (i.e. over 15,000'), which if you are in a 747, you are bound to be doing, the available settings for visibility in the advanced weather options are all but useless. At 'unlimited', everything is crystal clear, even at 40,000', which to my eyes looks pretty awful (especially with FScene ground textures making things brighter than the default in any case). However, at '50 miles', the next step down, there is so much haze that I might as well have not bothered investing in FScene, (or FSGenesis and all the rest), 'cos you don't then see much worth seeing. Is there a cfg file somewhere where the visibility can be altered manually? Given that the weather settings are specified in the .flt file, I am not all that optimistic - the details in the .flt file are terse of course, to say the least; nothing tweakable at any rate.I already have Flight Environment (which is wonderful) so don't want any other weather/texture management systems really, but advice on how to get a decent looking light haze without hiding all the scenery quite so much would be appreciated (and surely not just by me!).Thanks,Martin

Hi Martin,There are several visibility ranges in FS9:0 to 10>10 to 30>30 to 60>60 to UnlimitedOnce visibility goes from one range to another, there will be a fairly drastic change in both sky color and perceivable forward visibility. The one you are experiencing is the >60 to <60 shift. The sky color can be altered to avoid the color change, which helps but doesn't solve this completely (ASv6 includes several such sky color sets). After much experimentation, I personally feel that 59SM is the best maximum, which gives the most forward visibility without the unrealistic "unlimited" >60 range. Getting 59SM maximum when above the surface visibility layer will require use of a weather add-on or the registered FSUIPC.Best,

I have always had the unregistered version of FSUIPC. If I paid for the registered vserion, do you know excatly what I would be able to do to tailor the visibility settings to my tastes (i.e. get the haze effect to appear as considerably less dense than the 59SM but without the unreal crystal clarity of the unlimited option)? Thanks,M.

Found that by setting max visiblity to 100,000 in FS9.cfg and then unlimited visibilty in weather settings I get just what I wanted - a decent haze effect but scenery clear enough to appreciate.M

Hi,Where in FS9.cfg did you set max visibility? There is one visibility line called DEFAULT VISIBILITY.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development TeamActive Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter

Jim,Maybe you are missing a line in your cfg file?? The setting for maximum visiblity in FS9 is not the same as the default visibility you mention: it is configured in the following line:MAX_UNLIMITED_VIS=As I say, if I set this to 100000 (it was at about 275000 before I changed it) I get just the right amount of haze for both high and low level flight - the haze increases as you fly higher. If you don't have this line in your fs9.cfg file for some reason, you could always add it in.Martin

Mine is set at 96560. Don't know who set it though. Could be AS.JimCYWG

Sounds about right. Cutting mine down to 100000 has made a big difference (i.e. improvement!!) to the overall effect of the sim - oh, you have to set the weather option too to 'unlimited' - assuming a clear day of course - and also increase the cutoff altitude in the advanced options visibility tab to something like 50000' - otherwise you get a sudden and horrible jump to unlimited visibility at some point in your climb.M.
