May 13, 200620 yr I have a number of addon airport sceneries where the grass texture, I feel, lets down the overall effect. I have tried to replace the grass textures in the relevant texture folders with other grass bitmaps, but I don't seem to be making any headway. My default grass texture (courtesy of a replacement fs9/scenery/world/texture/detail1.bmp file from the AVSIM library) looks far better (IMO) - see screenshot. What I cannot find is the bmp file that is creating my default grass texture. In the fs9/texture folder, I can only see a number of .r8 files. Can anyone point me to which files I need to copy over to the addon scenery texture folders in order to replace the blur there with the crisper looking grass to the right of the screenshot?I am assuming (??) the detail1.bmp file is global and will act on all addon grass textures?Thak you,Martinhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/149120.jpg Martin Stebbing, EGLF (UK)
May 13, 200620 yr I'm not positve, but I believe the grass to the right is a special photo-real texture applied to a "polygon" at 1.2m/pixel. Takes some special programming to get it to work. The normal textures (left) are at 4.8m/pixel. But I must say, that texture to the left does not look to me like the typical grass texture. But it will depend on what the author chose to use. Sorry, I can't help on the actual file names. In the end, though, I don't think you'll be able to find any texture which meets your expectations on a global basis.Thomas[a href=http://www.flyingscool.com] http://www.flyingscool.com/images/Signature.jpg [/a]I like using VC's :-) Tom Perry
May 13, 200620 yr I have to say that I have had similar thoughts about the grass textures with many freeware airports. My bugbear is the raw image files that I believe are 64 X 64 pixels and make an otherwise excellent scenery look very FS98 or earlier. I guess that we've got used to seeing the way that modern payware designers have moved to photoreal textures or at least larger bmps with more detail. I think the only way you could do anything about the more basic textures would be to either ask the designer to consider doing something about it or decompile the bgl yourself and rewrite some of the code to call preferred textures. I'm no expert on scenery design so someone else may have more expertise. Also try asking in the scenery design forum.
May 13, 200620 yr I use this file:realterrain.zip from the Avsim Library. Here's part of the readme:"Realistic airport terrain. Replaces the bland airport grass environment with varied ground textureswhich blend well with the surrounding terrain. Subtle 3-D look from the air, natural texture diversityand seasonal variety greatly enhance the appearance of both default and addon airports from the air andon the ground."Try and see if it helps with what you're looking for.Jim
May 13, 200620 yr Thomas, you are right that the grass to the left is not the default - it is taken from another file and is the best I can achieve. The default is even worse. Just a green blur. Even payware scenery I have bought recently has the same problem when it comes to the grass. Why it has to look so awful is beyond me.I will have a look at the realterrain.zip file. I managed to get the default grass to look good (I think) by choosing from a number of textures (also from the AVSIM library) and then replacing the detail1.bmp, as I said. If I manage to get my addon scenery to use thee same texture, I will let you know how!M. Martin Stebbing, EGLF (UK)
May 13, 200620 yr Unfortunately I already have a very similar set of replacement textures to the one in your link, as it turns out. The files are for the scenery-world-texture folder: I tried renaming them and using them as bitmaps for the grass texture in the addon scenery/texture folders where I have the problems, but there isn't a vast improvement.I'll keep scratching my head on this one ...M. The textures are called via the file terrain.cfg, which in the case of airport backgrounds provides for the removal of any autogen objects. Addon airports can either use the same techniques as the default MS airports, or supply custom terrain textures. The typical texture is applied as a 256x256 texture with 4.8m resolution. It is possible to create "flat gound objects" with higher resolution using GMax or the earlier SCASM scenery design methods.scott s..
May 14, 200620 yr You might want to look at what Shez does in his airports. He uses SCASM to put down photo terrain as the airport background, then layers his objects over it.Here is an overhead of his KSNA. Note that his ground doesn't blend into the default landclass (I am using the GE textures). But if you look at just the airport, I think it looks nice.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/149169.jpgI like to use sbuilder to create airport backgrounds. You can then use just about any texture you want, at least if you are unhappy with the global texture replacements. It is more work than simply installing a couple of files, but it is someting to consider. I'm sort of a flight sim tinkerer myself. I "live" with most airports, but if there are some that I like to use repeatedly, I will fine tune them to my taste. scott s..
May 14, 200620 yr Thanks again Scott. Yes, I'm a bit of a tinkerer too. Haven't got the patience to do a scnery from srcatch but like you I'll fine tune my favourite areas to suit my own tastes.
