G1000 xml code

Hey Guys.

Is anyone familiar with the old style FSX XML code? I've been looking to change/correct a couple of lines of text in the G1000 Cockpit Safety Checklist digital display in the MFD. I've opened up the various CAB files and changed the actual text to read what I want but the MFD is still displaying the original checklist. Either I've not saved the files as I thought or the xml is 'reading' the text from another file somewhere. The text is easy to change but I am a novice regarding the xml code. There does not seem to be a lot of code as such for each of the checklists.

The text is where the check says to switch off the batteries. The displays just die when you do that. The other line is where the Bleed Valve 1 and 2 switch is repeated. I've edited the text but cannot get it to display.

I'll keep trying because it's possible I've simply became mixed up with all the different files. There are about 6 to 8 files that seem to use the same text and I've changed them all. I have the originals backed up, so I'm still okay if things go belly up.

If someone could get back here and give some help, that would be great. Another friend has said to just live with it, but I'd like it to be changed if possible.

Cheers...Ken.

Hi Ken,

The simplest way to do these things, is to unpack the cab file into a subfolder to the gauges folder, which the same name as the cab file.

FSX will look for a folder first, a cab file second.

So, now having the xml files in a folder, it becomes easier to edit, rename, test etc.

The MFD files are actually spb files and need to be converted to xml first.  (No need to convert them back).

I'll send you a PM for further help if required..

Hi Bert,

Bruno and  I started out to simply change the opening splash screen to reflect the current Airac cycle rather than the static dates that display at startup. I know this means changing it every twenty eight days but I like the idea of it being accurate. This led me to think I could also change the Digital checklist. I know that yourself and a lot of folks prefer the GTN750 but my G1000 works really well and my son, who is a real world jet jockey has shown me how to interpret the speed trend arrow so that the aircraft is a lot more stable in FLC mode. Anyway, I digress....

I've opened all of the relevant CAB files in the FSX Gauges folder and now have sub folders in there as you suggested. My issue is with the Cockpit Safety Checklist. In order to power the electrics, you have to switch ON both batteries, you may have the GPU but this requires at least one battery to be on. As you work through the checklist, you come to a line that tells you to switch both batteries to OFF. This killls the electrics, no displays, no checklist. So I am assuming this is incorrect. There is also a line which is repeated twice. This is the Bleed valve 1 and 2 switch. Plus the checklist does not mention the INSP Light Switch which should be OFF.

I've looked at real world checklists and am trying to amend the sim to be the same. I can see there are the spb files as you say and I wondered if they could be opened in some way. They may well be the files that need changed also. I'll go look for a convertor.

I would like to take you up on your offer of help via PM as I feel that the more we learn, the more we can help others. I'll be in touch.

Thanks and Regards...Ken.

Hi Ken,

It's good to know that someone else enjoys the native Carenado® G1000 and not have to go for the GTN750, as I too had to learn how to use FLC and implement VNAV correctly in this lovely bird as is. It's a good challenge that I enjoy.

It also seems that FSX still has more reliable compatibility than for P3D so far from what I read in this forum.

As for the edits to the XML code, you really helped my endeavours in getting the checklists as close as possible to the real thing.

Thanks & cheers,

GW
