June 22, 200619 yr Good post, but I think that it doesn't have so much to do with age than with the type of gaming. I would think that most FPS gamers (Halo, FEAR) are on the XBox, because you don't have to tweak your PC to death to get acceptable frame rates - just put in the disc, play and use XBox Live to chat with others. The other type of gamer is the simulation/strategy gamer where a keyboard and advanced controls are required (Civ, Total War, Movies, Sims, FS9). For example: Maxis tried multiple times to port the Sims to a console and all attempts more or less flopped.
June 22, 200619 yr Well, a modular and upgradable console with multiple peripherals and a keyboard would be.... a PC!Really, there is nothing really not much of a difference between an XBox and a PC, besides the fact that you can't upgrade an XBox and that they are not backwards compatible. For the average consumer it is a great way to plug'n'play, but I think more serious gamers will always prefer the PC. The modular PC approach is what makes the difference and, really, some of us just have more fun squeezing out more FPS on FS9 to unlock the lastest visuals and effects than flying. Call it a game within a game.XBox and Macs are great for the average Joe user, because they "just work", but unfortunately they have to end up in the trashcan when their lifecycle is over. It is not usually the OS that runs poorly - every WinXP install runs like Speedy Gonzalez at first, until you install any evil 3rd party hardware with sub-par drivers.I love the PC, because I can fit it to suit my personal needs and upgrade at any time.Pat
