A tale of two computers

Featured Replies

I have two computers that almost the same.

When my old computer broke last summer I took it in to get it fixed.  The motherboard and CPU were blown.  I asked my computer guy to replace them.  He did but he had a hard time getting it to work with Windows 7 and it still had things wrong with it so I left it there and bought a new one, an Alienware Aurora from Dell.

After a coule of weeks he called me up and said all the problems were solved and did I still want it.  He put about 1200 bucks in it including an MSI Enthusiast  gaming motherboard.  The 100TB SSD that was in it was still working fine but when he installed Windows 10 to get it running all the programs were gone.

I felt bad he put so much into it, and he is a personal friend, I paid him and put it in my closet figuring maybe some my grandkids might want it.

My custom system

i7-7700 CPU @ 4.20GHZ

32GB RAM

nVidia GeForce GTX 970 video card.

100GB SSD  (850 GB available)

-----------------------------------------------------------

My Alienware System

i7-7700 CPU @3,3 GHZ

64GB RAM

NVidia GeForec GTX 1080 video card

250GB System SSD

200GB HD

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Having FSX on a conventional HD was becoming unsatisfactory due to long loading times, skips and stutters.

So I combined the two.  I'm far from being a computer geek but I can swap hardware.

I resurrected the custom computer and scavenged the video card and hard drive out of the Alienware.

Now I have a system that is ideal for me.

i7-7700 CPU A4.20GHZ

nVidia GeForce GTX 1080 video card

32 GB RAM

1TB SSD with 450 GB space left over after installing FSX and all the Orbx  and Aerosoft scenery.  Lots of room left over for additional scenery.

2TB Hard drive almost empty for whatever.  Plan to install my old MS Train simulator and FS4 dedicated to Military AI Works scenery and ai arcraft on it..

Now with My Traffic running at 45% I can take off from the north end of San Francisco Bay and fly over San Francisco and land at KSFO with airliners at almost every gate and nary a skip or stutter and my frame rate never drops below 30fps.

I think I died in my sleep the other night and went sim heaven.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

Told you that cpu and video card would fly !

 LOL

Yeah, you did Sue.  I get better tech support from you than I do from just about anyone.  I wish you were my next door neighbor.

Between you and my friend and the computer shop you keep me running.

When I have a problem  call him and he'll stop by the house on his way to work and do his voodoo magic.  He never charges me for those visits but I always give him a container of home made chili or spaghetti sauce to take with him.
