System upgrade?

Hi everybody,

I am experiencing very poor performance in P3D and I don't really know what to do about it.

Also loading takes ages.

I run P3D on a iMac (Windows10 trough Bootcamp), and I don't want to open up my iMac.

I have already added RAM memory (now 24 iso 8), but I have a feeling there is something wrong with my hard disk.

Here is a screenshot:

The Disk constantly runs at 100% and the read speed seems very low.

What could I do about this? Would it help to run P3D from an external SSD with USB3 (I have only thunderbolt 1 and USB3)?

I would run Disk Utility on the host Mac OS and do an integrity check. The hard disk could be failing.

This does not give any errors.

You can see under the Processes tab which process is hammering the disk, it might not be P3D but some background task.

However I don't think the HDD is the limiting factor. That iMac is essentially a 2012 mid-range notebook stuck inside a desktop LCD screen. With just a GTX 680MX GPU and Ivy Bridge (IIRC) CPU, it's not going to perform great with modern sims/games.

Photoscenery will cause long load times stopping at 6% and sitting there for some time and then finally loading.  Photoscenery, when enabled, will load whether you will be flying near it or not.

Orbx puts some photoscenery and objects in Scenery/World/Scenery.  Everything in the Scenery/World/Scenery and Scenery/Global/Scenery folders will load whether you want it too or not.

I do know for a fact, based on personal experience, photoscenery loading will cause HDD thrashing and sometimes, if not careful, it can bring your computer to its knees.

I doubt using an external SSD with USB3 will help.  I have that and never saw any performance improvements from having an internal SSD.  Of course, since you have it, you can always try and experiment.  I doubt many users of P3D use USB3 technology.
