Fraps Antialiasing Issue

Featured Replies

I have recently begun playing with capturing video using Fraps, but the odd thing is that it doesn't seem to be capturing with antialiasing. In the sim everything looks great at 8x, and it seems to record just fine, but when I play the avi files back it's all full of jaggies like I'm not running AA at all. I've tried dropping down to 4x to see if that had anything to do with it, but the jaggies remain. Any idea as to why this is happening? I've seen lots of smooth videos and have to think they are using Fraps as well. Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.

No insight at all? Am I the only one with this problem?

Sounds like you are capturing at 'half size' rather than 'full size'. Select Full size and check the box for 'NO Sync' and lower the capture FPS to 25 or under, that should help. Also, it will capture at whatever resolution you have FS set to, the higher the better looking, but it will also kill the FPS. You will need to experiment to find the best settings.Hope this helps

Thank you for the reply.I do have it set for full-size, and 25 fps as well, but I'm not sure about the "no sync" option. I'll have to look at that. Also, I'm running in my native resolution of 1680x1050.Thanks again.

Use 1024x768 and you shouldnt have a problem.

Ah, ok. Well if that's the case then I guess shooting videos is a no go for me then. I have a wide-screen monitor and anything less than it's native resolution looks crappy. Thanks for your time though, I'm glad someone could finally help me. Much appreciated.

What you see isn't always what you get with FRAPS, you should try a few test films, because usually on playback they look fine.

Interesting, I just updated to the latest version of FRAPS and recorded about 3 hours worth of footage for my upcoming movie.... I went and played it back to preview what I had captured.... it looked like total crap.... all jagged edges :( The anti-aliasing when capturing seems to not be working.... I'm going to install the previous version and see if the problem still persists...Will report back soon.

Aaron, What are your video driver settings ( Anti-Aliasing, Antriscopic Filtering, Quality, etc ) if you don't mind my asking? What video card do you use? I used to use High Quality setting ( and that renders all other settings besides AA/AF unsettable ) and now I switched to 'Quality' and manual settings ( based on some guide I found awhile back ). When I get home from work today I'm going to switch it back to HQ and give it a shot. I've made about 30 - 40 movies thus far and haven't had this issue until now... it may be that video setting change. Oh, and my card is a 256mb eVGA GeForce 6800 Ultra.

Well I went home today for lunch and played with all the video settings that I could possibly think of. Nothing changed it.I have NO idea what could have caused the change... as I said, I've made a LOT of movies and this is the first time I've run into this. :(

Hi Jeff,I have an nVidia GeForce 6800GT that was running an 84.21 driver which I recently upgraded to the 91.31. I haven't tried it since that upgrade, but I've tried all combination of AA and AF settings from 4x to 8x and 4x to 16x on AF with no changes. I have a feeling in my case that resoltuion must e the problem. Are you able to turn your res down to 1024 x 768 to see if that clears the jaggies?

I did lower my resolution to 1024x768 and it made no difference. As I said, I used to never get jagged edges in the captured video... it IS possible that it's the latest drivers for my card... I'm really not sure yet. I think I may have some older drivers that I can try out.Another note on the resolution, it can only WRITE the maximum. If you are capturing at Half Size, then 1600x1200 would be fine because it would only be writing a video at 800x600.

FRAPS seems to disable AA if you capture at 1/2 res

Hmm, that's interesting.I've been using it for a long time and never noticed that before. All of the Misty Fjords / Vancouver+ I have made had 0 anti-aliasing issues and I have always captured at half.Feel free to see them for yourselfMisty Fjords:http://chicago054.server4free.de/jeff/mf_movies.htmVancouver+:http://chicago054.server4free.de/jeff/v_movies.htmTongass Fjords:Coming up next ( if I can get this issue resolved :( )
