I think I might have misread your post above. I thought you meant that to use the trim in flight you would have to actually steer the airplane into that up or down directions. There is a lot of misunderstanding regarding the use of trim in the sim community and so I‘m a bit quick sometimes to try to correct that. 😄

As soon as I recentered it the trim worked. I assume this is the way the actual aircraft functions. 

That's exactly what I was trying to say LOL 🙂

I had that before pushback when I set the take of trim sometimes. Just move the yoke og what ever you control your plane with back and forward, and pronto you can now trim up.
