Final approach is established on the glideslope.Short final is inside the Middle Marker ie Imminent landing.That's my rough, non-industry explanation anyway. I'm sure someone will be along with the proper definition soon. August 6, 200619 yr Author The terms long and short finals used to be used at Heathrow (EGLL) to refer to the distance from touchdown at which ATC vectored aircraft to intercept the ILS. Approaching runways 27, "short" meant that the ILS was intercepted over Westminster; "long" over Docklands. Gerry Howard
