Night surprise

Featured Replies

Hi all!I think this is my first post on this forum :) As i was flying around at night, i was pleasantly surprised to see this :)nite.JPGA few comments on the fsx demo which i haven't seen mentioned elsewhere:- Houses still remain too brightly lit as evening sets in. They stand out like a sore thumb in the otherwise dark scenery. This was already the case in FS9, and i don't think it has improved.- Ships need some nav lighting .. that'd be a sight to behold :)- The lighthouse has a rather dim light.. it would be nice to give it a nice beam to light up the sky.. maybe something similar like the old green/white rotating beacons we had in FS9- The strobes on all planes have gone bonkers. They should have a frequency of once flash per second. They were already too fast in FS9, but now they seem to be 10 times faster still. (i do have a dual core pc though, so could be a timing issue). The lighting on cars isn't too impressive. For comparison, you may want to check out X-Plane 8.5 (which is still a beta as well). You can see the red and white lights from miles away which makes the scenery look amazing.. maybe something similar can be achieves in FSX?Well that's it for now.. there were also plenty of nice surprises, so i don't mean to whine or anything, just pointing out some areas that could use some work.btw i like the music in the menus.. if you guys at MS ever need more tunes, check out www.moonbase69.nl (shameless plug here).

The night textures are HORRENDOUS but I think that's one of the last things they do.YES, WAY TOO bright as usual and seeing lines on the runway at night, textures from ground vehicles bleeding through clouds (NIGHT OR DAY). There IS a COOL EFFECT with the light bloom and the taxiway lights though. Exterior lights are WAY OFF alignment when looking outside view. Flashing of black texture on aircraft when lights blink. The WORST ABSOLUTE night time GLARING ISSUE is the CYAN colored reflection off the water WITH CLOUDS or WITHOUT, it is AWEFUL and looks like a kids coloring book.Carmine http://forums.avsim.net/images/wave.gif

Tried the demo at night and I was appalled to put it mildly - even worse than default FS9 night textures and that is saying something! So I'm glad that after a bit of searching I came across this thread - good to not be alone on this.Bruceb

Sure you have the latest video drivers, etc? I agree the houses don't look right but here is the exact position you are in on my computer. I DO have the "toned" down version of the milky way file, but other than that the rest of my installation is "virgin".http://www.air-source.us/images/screenshot/fsx.jpg

I would tend to agree with the points made here, although not going so far as to call the textures "horrible". It begs the question as to whether the lighting and night textures have changed or will change between the demo build and the retail build. In the event that they have not yet changed, time's getting a bit short to make adjustments and still keep to the (probable) schedule. I'm sure that a 3rd party vendor will change/add a lot of the things that look a bit off in the night textures, but it would be nice to find out whether that'll be necessary or not.-Ivan

I did some night flying a few nights ago (having the room darkened works best, then your eyes can become accustomed to the dark)I noticed that the ground lighting & houses looked different, and felt there needed to be more specs of light. Then I tried FS9 at night, and it looked better with lots of specs if light. The reason is that most of the houses have some of the windows lit up (giving specs of light), whereas in FSX none of the houses have any windows lit up. The houses are probably missing textures which will hopefully be fixed in the final release.I really enjoy night flying in FSX, and the stars are really impressive.

>There IS a COOL EFFECT with the light bloom>and the taxiway lights though.I'd like to know what you're talking about? Both the runway and taxiway lights still look awful as they did in FS2004. Lots of work there for Aces to do... Not to mention, they still haven't corrected colors for the remaining 2,000' of runway to be amber/orange. IMHO, they don't have the correct look at all.

Yes I think that just about sums it up - it just seems that night textures received no attention in the demo (apart from stars which are good although a little too bright). Traditionally FS night textures have been bad in FS and its been left to 3rd party developers to fix things up but I was kinda hoping that things would be different this time round.Bruceb

>There IS a COOL EFFECT with the light bloom>and the taxiway lights though. Not sure if you meant the "bloom" option in-game (in the options menu) or not, but that option isn't active in the demo.I'm not sure if that's what you meant though.

Hi Shane,I thought it was active from what people were saying, but I guess I was wrong. :) I was under the impression that it had bugs in it, so people weren't using it and was thought to hit performance pretty hard. Needless to say though, I'm pretty disappointed with the runway/taxiway lighting staying the same from FS2004. I had initially thought they would make significant improvements over that. I think the thing that really erks me the most, is they could easily change the lighting colors I mentioned very easily. I've yet to see a runway in real life with that shade of 'yellow' for the remaining 2,000' of runway. Everything I've seen is amber/orange for those. I don't know if you have or not, but take a look at X-Plane; they actually got it correct.Al

Is this thread in regards to the demo or the beta that was released lastnight? I have not installed the beta yet but plan on it when i get home tonight. Hopefully they have fixed the ch yoke/pedals bug that was in the demo or else i wont be playing it at all.

This was all observations on the demo...it will remain to be seen if any fixes made it into the beta build. From what Paul (P-12C) was saying in his blog, it looks like the ACES team is in test and final bugfix mode now, so nothing else is getting adjusted from the latest build. Since even the beta is running off an old build of the code, the next group of people to evaluate the night textures will probably be the AVSIM conference attendees. We'll just have to wait and find out what they think.-Ivan

Maybe they all have full roof skylights or something..and that's the glow of rooms full of HD TV's?I'm sure someone will stick a new texture for this in the library soon.
