Rotary Encoders ?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Bought a new button box with six rotary encoders - as it stands now - I didn't think this through enough and now realize the error of my ways... I had visions of simply mapping the encoders to such functions as HDG Bug, CDI, Alt Sel, Prop Levers - Mixture Levers - etc etc etc - - - and they would work... As I'm sure everyone else knows - this is problematic - they're easy enough to map BUT it would take me an hour to spin the HDG Bug enough times to make 360 degrees - similar results with other attempts... Is there any easy to implement solutions available (I'm not a programmer) ???

Thanks...

Regards,
Scott

I wish you luck. I have been searching for years. Other than having dual encoders with switches, using linda to toggle between "fast" and regular speed turns of the knob. Now in Xplane there are Lua scripts that do it very well.

Hi Adrian,

Thanks - that doesn’t sound so promising... You would think with all the advanced controllers and home cockpits we wouldn’t be breaking new ground... LOL - I have six of the less than ideal encoders now...

i did find one purpose that seems to work well for - altitude preselect - but I just used two of them - one for 10,000 ft increments - the other for 1,000 ft increments - not the most efficient use - but they’re sitting there idle anyway...

Regards,

Scott

I know Scott. If it can be done Xplane , why not FS. If I had the time to learn more about Lua, I may try.

What brand of rotary do you have? I thought most rotaries have dual switching in each direction depending on how fast they are turned. The second switch is programmed to a higher rate. At least this is how the rotaries on the VR Insight MCP work in Linda.

Hi GB,

Yeah - since I fly many different aircraft - I wanted a simple button box - not something resembling any prototype equipment - had read good reviews on this one... From my tests - it seems to be single speed... It's a shame - it's a really nice box...

Scott

The way I did it, re: hdg, alt and crs adjustments, was using FSUIPC commands. I would turn the desired hdg knob clockwise and assign it to rapid increase hdg, by tens as I recall. Then, using same knob, rotate counterclockwise and assign that input to decrease hdg slowly, by ones. So, if I wanted to turn right 45 degrees I would turn the knob 5 clicks clockwise, (50 degrees) then back up 5 degrees by clicking counterclockwise 5 clicks. Not 100% real but it worked and only used 1 knob. Hope that makes sense.

Hi all.

I use the "Default FSX Library" to control the speed of my rotaries as below, simple and works a treat on a dual encoder, notwithstanding I have seen somewhere recently and bit of code that reacts to the speed of the knob is turned, spin it fast = large movements, spin it slowly = small increments all 1 on 1 rotary encoder... If I can find it again, I will post link back here asap...
