Fly-Over and Fly-By

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

I need some information about realworld fms function. Especially about procedures for Fly-by. Anyone can explain to me how the turn-parameters of an fly-by waypoint are calculated? Is it right that the type of a waypoint (fly-over/fly-by) is implemented in the AIRAC? If so: Are there also radii published which the fms needs to take care of? How the fms calculate the start of an fly-by turn?

Hopefully you understand my question, if not, let me know 😉

Thank you for your advice

That's an interesting question. I don't know much about it but found this resource possibly useful to you: http://www.davi.ws/index.php?link=avionics&link2=

Take a look at Chapter 15, the section on Lateral Profile. It's suggesting that the primary consideration is bank angle which might be calculated based on turn radius for RF legs or otherwise based on airspace and passenger comfort. The actual turn radius will depend on speed, bank angle, wind etc. RF legs would be from published procedures (eg SIDs, STARs, IAPs) but I don't know if they ever happen in enroute navigation.
