Recently I forgot to do the after landing checklist, and upon gate arrival I turned the engines off and was suddenly powerless, because the PM did not start the APU in his after landing flows (triggered by retracting the speedbrakes). Apparently he only starts the APU when he reads the APU item on the after landing checklist. Is this on purpose?

There's a Config option for this... Either turn on APU during checklist or during the after landing flow.
