iFDG MD-11s - Problem

Featured Replies

I have a lot of repaints of this plane - but the PPW model, beautiful as it is in many ways, is causing me a lot of problems. I wonder if anyone can help? After take-off the plane seems very underpowered. When I finally set the AP, ATS/IAS, the AP never reaches the speed I set. For instance, if I have 300KIAS on the dial, the plane will start to throttle down at something like 270. It then gradually slows down, ignoring the AP setting, and very soon (well above stall speed) start going nose up.I can mitigate this effect up to a point by climbing very gently - less than 800' per minute, but even then I often end up with a stall. I am pretty sure that the fault is with the a/c - if I change to a different MD-11 model, I don't have this problem.I have changed the thrust_scalar value in the aircraft.cfg file, from the default 1.0 to 1.5 - any higher and the plane starts running away on the ground. This setting helps, but not much. Are there any other settings I can adjust? I don't want to touch lift and drag parameters (as they don't seem relevant here). And has anyone else had this - can't see any other posts? Thanks,Martin

Do the GE engines do the same or have you not tried them?

What altitude are you going to 300 knots at? Most of the time it is easier to climb at 250 till 10,000' then 280 till 20'000 then switch the auto throttle over to mach mode. Enter cruise speed and it should be ok. Another question what is your VS during the climb?

It seems just to be the PPW..The 300KIAS is just a test. Normally I fly within 'proper' speed parameters, along the lines you indicate. I normally climb at 1800 ft per min, but that can vary of course. With this MD-11, even 1000 ft/min can be too much.Whatever, the basic problem is that the plane throttles back when on AP, well before the indicated speed is reached, no matter what altitude I am at. If I disengage the AP and apply full thrust myself, I can usually get back up to speed, though I often have to trim nose down quite drastically too.I also tried putting the panel I use for the MD-11 onto the default B747, just to see that it isn't a gauge problem or similar (given that it is the ATS that seems to be the real problem), but the panel works fine with other aircraft.Odd...M.

Update: this problem remains even when I get to level cruise altitude. As soon as I set the Autothrottle, the engines gradually lose power, until a stall if I leave things, even though I have the IAS set and the AT & AP show as on. If I switch off the AT and push the throttle forward, I gain speed againI don't get this oddity with any other a/c. Is there possibley a fault in the .air file, or model.mdl file??? (Re-installing the a/c doesn't help).M.

Hi,Have you tried another panel in the offending plane? That might show you a little more.Andy.

Try using the aircraft.cfg of the other MD-11s that work properly. Replace everything in the .cfg except the lights & contact points. No harm trying, remember to backup the original :)

I tried both of those yesterday (sorry not to have said about the cfg file!). The cfg files are in fact identical, from (General) onwards (I compared in MS Word). In the end, I flew the 'faulty' plane OK today. I just have to rememberthat the ATS doesn't work and to control the plane's speed manually. I use a Saitek X52 joystick, so this is quite easy to do.there is definitely something amiss though - if I don't increase the thrust scalar to 1.5, the plane is almost unflyable. ???M. :-)

Ok another crazy idea that might work? :)Backup the aircraft.cfg1.Open up the aircraft.cfg and locate the troublesome MD11s & pick one of them.2. In the sim= line put sim=X (where X is the name of the .air file of the PROPERLY functioning MD11s) By that I mean lets say your General Electric (GE) MD11s fly perfectly. In the .cfg find a GE-powered MD11 and copy the sim= line into the clipboard (CTRL+C)3. Paste this into the sim= line of the misbehaving PW MD-11, replacing the original -see below (I dont know what the .air files are named exactly I have just made up the name for the sake of example)In other words you are just "telling" the PW MD11 to use the GE .air file.[fltsim.0]title=iFDG MD11 China Easternsim=MD11GE <----*change this*model=panel=sound=texture=71atc_id=B2171atc_airline=China Eastern atc_flight_number=999atc_heavy=1ui_manufacturer=Boeingui_type=MD-11ui_variation=China Eastern description=7. Do the above for just one livery (just in case it doesnt work)8. Now try flying....hee hee. Im not so sure it will work but give it a go.

Good idea, but sadly it doesn't help. All my PPW models have this same problem, whereas the PGE & PGES models do not. The .air file is the same in each folder of course, so no help there either.I will try moving the textures of the faulty planes over to the PGE folder and adding their details to the aircraft.cfg file there. Let you know if it helps!

Doesn't help either. This is unbelievable - the only paramter different now from the a/c that work fine is the texture folder! I can't figure it out at all. The AT increases the speed for a while, but then, way short of target, you see (and hear) the throttle cutting back, and it just keeps going down until stall speed..Well, I can fly the planes now I am aware of the problem. Increasing thrust_scalar to 1.5 helps a lot, and if necessary I just disconnect the AT and increase the throttle with the joystick - that always works fine.I'd have thought the problem was with the panel - but as I say, I tried it with the default B747, and that flew OK.M

Wow that is crazy. I remember having nagging problems like this in FS9 and it does your head in proper! Why not put aside the iFDG for a moment and check this other freeware MD11 out? :)...maybe u could also try using its PW .air file for your misbehaving MD11!Here:http://www.overland.co.jp/sms/free.html

I found that plane when scanning through alternatives in AVSIM file library. I may try it out - though I do love some of the repaints of the iFDG models. Look at this for instance. Looks superb in the air, and now that I know the problems, not too difficult to control. (A few days back, I was assuming my flying skills had gone to pot and was not a happy bunny!).Probably never going to find a solution to this problem, and I'll probably get back to doing some flying now. I'll have another look at your link (all in Japanese!)..M. :-)

Hi,perhaps you already answered this, but what I hoped to say was to swich the, say, 747 default panel into the offending planes folder and see if that makes any difference.Could you also try this mad idea.make a copy of the offending texture.rename the first one original etc etcrename the copy to the texture's original name and then !!---overwrite one bmp at a time from a good folder and try the plane out after each change and see what happens. Andy.
