Graphic settings

Featured Replies

Since I have been watching the videos and appreciating the stunning visuals I have just realised that the realism is in large part not just down to graphical fidelity but the rock solid way it is displayed (putting aside pop in)

There is absolutely no sign of aliasing or "jaggies" in any of the videos and certainly no z fighting or flickering as seen in Xplane so I am wondering how this is achieved (which method of AA is being used and at what setting for example)?

Perhaps somebody who has been fortunate enough to get a hands on or has read the information elsewhere can tell us what settings were available and what they were set at?

I think they're running at 4K and probably with a little bit of AA (don't need much at 4K).

Yeah, the "z-flickering" in XP is really off-putting... I think it's something to do with OpenGL used in XP (versus Direct X in FSX/P3D/FS2020).

If you view any of the videos or screenshots at their native 4K resolution, there is definitely plenty of aliasing and shimmering. If you are viewing them full size on a 1080p monitor, you are essentially seeing 4x/2x2 SSAA.

Since it's likely that the engine has been switched to deferred rendering, the options would be FXAA, SMAA, or a temporal filter. I sure hope there will be a resolution scale option, as even a small increase can make all those post-processing techniques work a lot better.

Surely if there was Aliasing in the original video then that would show up regardless since you are seeing reproduction not rendering from scratch?

Certainly if I recorded Xplane the aliasing was evident even at lower resolution recordings obviously it wouldn't show in a still. (except as jagged edges)

Personally I am viewing at 1080p

Yes it will be interesting to see the rendering options once we are in beta.

Good point, I guess that could be it.

In that case it would be good to see it in lower resolutions.

So far I think that all released footage from Microsoft Flight Simulator is in 4K resolution or higher, except for the two Feature Discovery episodes. So if you're viewing them at 1080p, it would be like playing the game with 4x/2x2 SSAA since the videos are being downsampled to half the resolution. If you take any Insider screenshots or video footage (either Insider videos, E3 2019 and X019 trailers, or footage given to content creators) and zoom in to view them at full size, the aliasing and shimmering is extremely evident. I've noticed it sometimes get worse in fast motion, so I think they're using a temporal filter.
