January 13, 20206 yr I recently updated my P3D rig to i9900k processor with 32GB memory. I kept the old video card 1080GTX, but am now thinking of updating my venerable 24 Samsung LCD as its 8 years old. I wanted to move up in size - 28 inch or maybe 32cm. Besides P3D I’d also like to stream movies on Amazon Fire. The big question here becomes if to go 4K or 1080p, and if 4K then if its worth updating my 1080GTX for maybe a 2nd hand 1080Ti or similar card? My budget for monitor is up to £400. thanks
January 13, 20206 yr I upgraded from a 1080ti to a used 2080ti. Many would tell you that there is not much value in that upgrade. I'd beg to differ! 😁
January 13, 20206 yr Moderator @pred02, you have a superb CPU and 32Gb RAM is also ideal for future-proofing. The 1080 is borderline for 4K. With a complex aircraft like the PMDG737 it might not give suitable performance but if you fly simpler GA aircraft then it should be okay. Long-term I would look at a 1080Ti or better. There are rumours Nvidia could be releasing a new range of cards cheaper and more powerful than the 20 series. I would invest in the graphics card first and then look at monitors. If you bought a 4K monitor now you may have to downscale to 1920*1080 to keep performance decent and that would compromise image quality. A 28” is not much bigger than a 24” and if you want 4K 32” should be the minimum. Ray (Cheshire, England). January 14, 20206 yr Author This is a very good point about the card for 4k and 32. In terms of timing, I have some family coming from the States end of Feb early March, so I would use the opportunity to get the card over. I can enjoy with 1080GTX in 1080p on my 24 until then. Any views if GTX 2080 or 1080Ti is better for P3DV4 in 4K? Thanks
January 14, 20206 yr Moderator The power difference between the 1080 Ti and 2080 Super is not significant. The 1080 Ti has 3Gb more memory (11Gb versus 8Gb) but lacks Ray Tracing of the 2080. But P3Dv4 doesn't use Ray Tracing at present so there's no real advantage to the 2080. But the 1080Ti is no longer made so you would have to buy second-hand and that could be risky. This comparison shows the differences:- https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1080-Ti-vs-Nvidia-RTX-2080S-Super/3918vs4050 I would be more inclined to look at the 2080 Ti as you get the benefits of both (11Gb and Ray Tracing) but it's very expensive. There are reports of the Nvidia 3000 series coming out this summer. With up to 16Gb of VRAM and reportedly being cheaper these look to be far better value than the 2000 series. If you can wait I would suggest you hold fire. It could save you a lot of money. https://www.tweaktown.com/news/68689/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-june-2020-earlier/index.html Ray (Cheshire, England). February 20, 20206 yr Author Hi, I will go for an used 1080ti (MSI) it's about $400-$450 used so I can get a bigger 4K monitor and run P3DV4. 2080ti is about $750 which is a bit after my budget. When 3080ti comes around I can consider upgrading. I will sell the old 1080GTX, I can probably get about $300 for it here in the UK so it's not a massive investment. I am also using the opportunity to get it from the States as my parents are flying to visit me here in the UK Just wanted to sense check that my plan makes sense and there will be performance improvement especially if I use a bigger monitor. Loving my new 9900k - it's ultra quiet and runs most things butter smooth. So much better than the old 4790k that I had before. Edited February 20, 20206 yr by pred02
February 20, 20206 yr I bought this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/iiyama-XUB3490WQSU-B1-ProLite-Ultra-Monitor/dp/B01AHR7REW 34 inch makes the sim so much more immersive! Oh and this one runs on 2K, between 4K and 1080P. Nice tradeoff between performance and pixels Runs really smooth on my GTX1070, never had such a good looking flightsim before! February 20, 20206 yr Moderator @pred02, the combo of the 9900k and a 1080Ti will make simming very enjoyable. It’s a personal choice what format monitor you go for. Yes, ultra wide gives more lateral visibility but the downside is 1440 vertical pixels is 30% less than 2160. A 1080Ti can run 4K with ease. Running it at a lower resolution is a bit of a waste of its potential. Unfortunately I cannot find any 21:9 4K monitors. Seems you have to make a choice which path to go down. February 21, 20206 yr In order to get a wow effect, size is everything. Having upgraded myself to a 35" 21:9 some time ago, if I had to decide again, I would now even consider a 38" 21:9 3840x1600 or a 4K. 21:9 or 4K would then be secondary. Factors to consider then would be: a) price, b) sitting close to a large screen might be better with a curved, c) when instrument reading is important, more vertical height with a 4K. It is maybe more expensive than you considered, but 9900K and 1080Ti are expensive too and it has to be balanced. February 22, 20206 yr Last time I have bought Monitor Philips 436M6VBPAB/00. For me - very good monitor for flightsim and for movies with resonable price (~460 GBP on Amazon). P3D working good with GTX1080 8GB adapter and UHD resolution.
