4G Mobile Internet

Featured Replies

Okay, theres me, knowlegable when it comes to all things PC Hardware... but never paid much attention to networking.

So much so that I had no idea you could whack a sim in a router and use the mobile network for your household gear.

My daughter has got herself a cracking job in the Channel Islands (you guys from the US have probably never heard of them) so here with her setting up her rented place. Guy at ISP's store gave us a free sim to try so we could see what sort of speeds she would get.

Now bear in mind that in the UK (BT Infinity) I get 74 mbs.... she gets 200 mbs! From a mobile network! Shes pays 30 quid I pay closer to 50 but for phones and unlimited.

I'm begging to think when 5G is more commonplace speeds will be astounding.

Anyone else using 4G mobile for household gear? If so which router did you opt for?

I actually do in my holiday apartment in Spain. Connection with the router is very patchy though. With sim in the phone close to 200 mbs, in the router anything between 10 and 50. It's a TP Link model. Currently I am troubleshooting it.

This is a TP Link too. Reasonable price one, not cheap. Claims up to 150 mbs.

Nice thing is she can opt out whenever she likes.

Mine sells for around 75 EUR, there is a Netgear model for almost 300 EUR. I wonder how much of added performance the more expensive models would bring.

Katy's was £72.99. The TMLR 6400. Actually, it does say in the description 300 mbs. At 2.4 Ghz.

Be interesting to see what she gets when it arrives in a few days. Deliveries are delayed to the Channel Islands at the Moment. Ferries I think, due to the recent storms.

There is an Asus version for just under 300 quid but still only claims up to 300 mbs

That's the same I have. It's actually only CAT4 so 150 Mbit/s. I will look into a model with CAT6 and a/c Wifi. But the TP does the job and the price is ok.

Oh right. 150 mbs  you say. So why does it specify 300 mbs?

Flying with a commercial flight sim is not very demanding on network latency. Typically a few milliseconds extra lag is not a big deal. Having said that, if you are going to use the simulator for things like synchrone aerobatics or you fly military flightsims than lag can become an issue. The big difference between wired connections and radio connections is that wired connection are typically full duplex. This means that if you have a 1000 Mbit/s wired connection you have actually a 2000 Mbit/s connection. 1000 Mbit/s one way and 1000 Mbit/s the other way at the same time. With a radio you are either transmitting or receiving but not at the same time. Although the connection can still be pretty good if you have a single connection, it can become problematic if multiple devices communicate over the same radio connection. Since it is single duplex you only have one active connection at any given moment per radio. Since you can't control the amount of 4G devices that connect to te provider at any given moment, your latency will vary.

Computer specs: CPU: fast | RAM: enough | GPU: fast | SSD: Pretty fast | Monitor: big | Internet bandwidth: pretty fast | Everything is 3Dfx compatible. 😉

A very good one with a great coverage . We are using two of those. The 4G Unlimited cards are still "alive". With the Netgear Nighthawk we ruined 2 cards in 3 weeks.

The speed is set by your provider not by the 4G router. We reach a speed of 95 mbs, upload 32 mbs and a Ping of 21ms.

Performance not so much, but better coverage. With the Netgear Nighthawk  AC1900  a lot of compatibility problems and ruined 4G cards, so we returned them.

Sorry mister Charliearon for the Amazon link. For all others,...I  wrote About the Fritzbox 6890 LTE router:

And who does not know the Channel Islands. 😂 Also known as the VAT free Islands to Import planes cheaply from the US to Europe.

Please take the hint..NO direct links to a site that sells products

I have edited out your direct link, again!  Telling others about a product, listing it's name and a description of where you got it is acceptable. Let others do a Google search for what you are describing.  Thank you for your understanding!

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!
