Gerard...where is that suneffect.cfg located??!?

Featured Replies

If you guys find the sun to small : search for the suneffecf.cfg file and change the default moon / sun according to your liking.

For my real size home cockpit I use :

Moon 1500 ( default 900 )

Sun 6072 ( default 2072 )

I tried all the usual suspect locations...can you point us to it?  Is in AppData?

On my machine, it is in C:\ProgramData\LockheedMartin\Prepar3D v5

The default file shows it is the Moon which is 2072, and the sun 900.

Thank you, Jim...had to enable HIDDEN FILES to access and see that folder.  Have now adjusted both settings values as per Gerard. 🙂  I did find the sun too 'small' and far away looking. I'm about to fire up v5 and see the results of the edit. Thanks for responding.

From an astronomical perspective, the real sun and moon are almost exactly the same size when viewed from earth, which is why the moon can often perfectly eclipse the sun. Of course, the sun is much bigger, but also much farther away. I agree that the default moon looks too big in the sim, and the default sun looks too small.

Apparently the sun image is a single file, “sun.bmp”. I’m not sure where the the moon graphics live. There would have to be multiple images to account for all the phases.

Unfortunately,  the sim can’t duplicate the real world phenomena where either the sun or moon look much bigger when near the horizon when rising or setting.

You guys were successful?  I tried modifying the Sun size but it only works with Enhanced Atmospherics disabled..

S.

The tweak works perfectly...SHOW Hidden FILES,  go to C:/Program Data /Lockheed Martin (usually a hidden folder) select suneffect.cfg and (from my tweaking enter next to the SUN the setting of 2100. That will give you a natural sized sun sphere. Also, you can at the time you have the folder open...create a sunefect.cfg shortcut as I did, so you can adjust the sun and moon sizes, after every flight from your Desktop...and then check out your setting. I found my final setting of 2100 to be about as natural a globe size as I'd see, with a brief eye sweep of the day sky.  This is only if you do not use Atmos Beta enabled.  That turns the sun into a golf ball.

I haven’t been using the enhanced atmospherics on recent flights, because I’m not really impressed by the new True Sky clouds. I really like the way the enhanced atmosphere itself looks in terms of haze and lighting, but the clouds are too bland and poorly defined for my taste.

Perhaps a different sun image is being used in enhanced mode, since the lighting is quite different.

It's the same size actually as the non-beta default, unless you change it as we have....and that change keeps...even if you cycle between Atmos Beta and Default Sky

Yes, thank you!  I used your settings to view/base start,..and had on my system, an almost Super Nova, lol. I have since adjusted it to 2100, and looks about the same as XP11.50's default, on my UltraWide. Thanks again...for it is so much better, but..if you run with TrueSky...the sun disk reverts back to default size.

TrueSky is work in progress which might take several months.

Well that was my point I tried with TS but it ignores the sun size configuration
