P3D V5 Performance

I agree with the performance, but unfortunately, this sim still has lots of compatibility issues in some instances causing the sim to crash. I think they came up with this update way too soon just to try and sell before FS2020 comes out. I understand it was probably a business decision, but it really affected every user. I for instance got tired of trying to get many of those issues solved with P3D support, but after a while they stop helping and solve nothing probably because they have no answer.

It's not true that it has "lots of compatibility issues". Be specific - what is P3D v5 incompatible with, that it is supposed to be compatible with?

Makes you wonder, how much testing they did for the DX12 transition? They're calling the clouds a 'preview' (remember when fsx did that for DX11?), and you're paying for a full fledged product that doesn't even have a proper weather engine. XP11 has been testing Vulcan for many months now, and is still not out.

A lot of people are tied into P3D long term because of 3rd party vendor support and we had nothing better.... But nowadays it is a very poor investment to get into.

They have never called the clouds a "preview", you just made that up.

Quite simply, they have given us optional early access to a beta feature - if you want to try it out, you check a box. If you want to fly with the old clouds, you don't. I am extremely happy that they gave us this option, as I fly with EA - it's not just clouds - every single flight.

If you think Prepar3d is a "poor investment", then good for you. No one is forcing you to use P3D. But this is a P3D forum, and the point of this thread is how good v5's performance is - a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with.

By the way, how many hours of Prepar3d v5 flight time did it take you to form these opinions?

Yeah... I was going to say that I'm really starting to like EA. The haze, the lighting, the reflections. It really does improve the sim in a big way.

I just completed my first "fully loaded" v5 flight and I'm at the point where I am considering uninstalling 4.5. I installed Radar Contact today. It works great. I have the NGXu, Active Sky, a ton of Orbx (all in NA), and GSX working. All of my airports are installed and verified working. I'm have not had any crashes at all. Frame rates are good considering that I'm still running an i5-8600k at 4.8Ghz. I do think the 2080Ti helps a lot. After boating season, I'll be upgrading for sure.

The only real issue left is GSX and KORD and the render to texture thing. I'm not worried about that. I'm sure they'll get it all ported over soon. I guess FLyTampa took a different route in their implementation as they use the heck out of render to texture and they made the switch pretty quickly.

Life is good in sim world. I was reading articles about how the genre was dead a couple of years back. Then it got a glimmer of hope with FSW until the sim gods squashed that like a bug and we were all bummed again. Now, there are 3 (soon to be 4) very nice sims out there and is sure to be around for years to come. The icing on the cake is that there are about 15-20 current CPUs to choose from (maybe more) that are perfectly capable of running them. I've been buying new motherboards, CPUs, and memory since 1982 trying to get one that would run MS Flight Simulator 95, 04, 09, X, etc. okay. Like she said in Poltergeist.... "They're heeeeeeeere.".   😎

I don't mind your difference in definition; "optional early access to a beta feature" to me is the same as a preview (like the old FSX DX11 preview)...that's simply the term I use, and the term I have seen other simmers use as well.  Like calling a sport Soccer vs. Football. Semantics.

I am not disagreeing with P3Dv5's performance, and yes, that did indeed go off topic....sorry about that (hey, it happens in just about every forum, oh well...not the end of the world).  As for the statement for being a poor investment - for a new person coming into simming, or someone looking at changing platforms and based on what is currently available and being released the opinion remains true with regards to out-of-box experience and financial investment to get the product to an equivalent level.

And how many hours I have is irrelevant to form the opinions I have stated.  I have been using simulators since 1995, fly real aircraft, and that is all I need.

Thank you, and goodbye!
