The inconsistency of FSX is really frustrating....

Featured Replies

The most frustrating aspect of FSX for me is the inconsistency. I get it setup to run nicely in one area where I get 20-25fps sitting at KRDG in PA. If I move to Half Moon Bay my FPS drops to 10 which is un-flyable. It is the succubus of FPSs for me. I think I'm approaching my "This really isn't any fun" threshold. I have 35 hours logged in FSX flying and probably 150 hours tweaking. So far I have spent over $400 dollars for memory upgrades and add-ons. Let me summarize what I now have. FSUIPC and Wideserver 7 are having technical problems which steal FPSs when running via a client PC. Pete Dawson is doing the best he can to solve it with MS help. The Eaglesoft Liberty drags my system down and is unflyable at 10 to 12 fps. (I'm in a minority apparently). Mytraffic has very little FPS impact along with very little traffic. I actually see less traffic after spending $30+ dollars. :) The only add-on that works as advertised for me is Justin's new FSX Mesh which cost $14.95 for all of North America. I have used all the tweaks; my sliders are starting to stick and appear to need lubrication. :) There is no way I can fly a GA aircraft wherever I want and particularly from a rural area to a big city without a slide show. This is the poorest performance I have encountered with ANY PC game out of the box with a mid level system. Challenging the limits of our computers is one thing, but putting it out of reach of most simmers seems risky. The inconsistency from one area to another is just plain poopy. I think I'll load FS9, fire up the Porter and head to a cabin I have in Misty Fjords for the winter. LOL.Bob..

Speaking of dogs, I miss my long gone buddy, King Shepard with 120 pounds of snapping jaw. lolol

Bob did you do they testure reduction tweak and the fiber tweak. With your system that should give you good FPS every were.I would say your Intel cpu is about the same as my AMD 3800.And I think your X850 in some case's is faster then my X1800xl.

Hi,Not all of them. I have not done the texture tweaks, but felt the look was really unacceptable from a couple screen shots. I am trying to find a balance between enjoyable flying and a graphics base that looks better than FS9. I can reduce everything down to zip and fly quite nicely, but at that point X-plane looks better. :) I have tried and removed several other changes not listed here because their affect decreased performance. (I'm in a>minority apparently)...>>Bob..:) :) Yeah, that's what Ron from Eaglesoft told me too ;) It took a pretty big chunk of fps from me in fs9 so i'm not expecting it to be playable in fsx which really has no cushion of fps to give. We are all in the same boat. Time and patience are the only solutions available to us i'm afraid. :)

At least your not alone Bob, but then I assume you've been reading the forums. It's now ell established that FSX eats frames. However, the inconsistency pattern isn't peculiar to FSX is it? I've always found a wild fluctuation in frames depending one where I'm flying with FS8 and 9. Ususally urban flying hits frames harder than rural.

IsmetM,Hi!I agree there have always been fluctuations. However, with so little head room available on FSX, the changes are more noticeable. We have folks proudly posting 5 or 6 fps rate increases! LOL. It is time for me to set FSX aside for awhile and let the dedicated and brilliant forum members work their magic. Right now there are just too many tweaks being suggested. And considering I haven't a clue what most of them are doing, I'm just blindly throwing darts. Thanks everyone for your help and I look forward to this great sim evolving in the (near?) future. :)Bob...

Hi BobP:Something is not right here; your computer should be much more capable running FSX than my Athlon 1.4 GHz, 1GB RAM, AGP 4x X800 All In Wonder based system. Have you implemented the "basic" tweaks (which all AGP mobo users should do even before any other tweaks) involving setting your video card PCI latency to 32, and TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400 in the |Display| section of fsx.CFG?I made a few tutorials on doing this as a sort of "baseline pre-requisite" for my fellow EFFC participants in a couple of posts there:http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.php?...er=asc&start=30http://forums.simflight.com/viewtopic.php?...er=asc&start=15I also discussed the potential benefits of using Powerstrip in those threads, although I have thus far not tested FSX without the Catalyst Control Center (CCC) installed to see if CCC is the actual cause of system crashes/reboots when both Powerstrip and FSX are run together. I'd like to run Powerstrip with FSX for the same benefits I get using FS9 with Powerstrip, but haven't tested that far yet (haven't had the time to uninstall and reinstall my ATI drivers). If someone here can test this and share their results of both Powerstrip and FSX running together succesfully without a crash, I'd be much obliged.I hope these "older" but critically important tweaks from the days of FS2002 and FS2004 (which still work in FSX) help you to boost your performance!:-) GaryGB

Hi Gary,Thank you for taking the time to reply. I purchased FSX October 3rd from Best Buy and tweaked, prodded and poked since day one. I am not happy with the results. My interest vary month to month from heavy iron to bush flying. I can't imagine an FSX update for the PMDG Queen that will work on my system. Heck, I can't even get a home built Liberty to work. LOL.My point is that I have lowered the sliders as far as I am willing to go and consider FSX fun. And I do appreciate your reply. Thanks.Bob...

I have inconsistancy too but more worryingly. I have most, if not all of the tweeks listed on this sight. I can start up in free flight at one of the smaller (less detailed) airports and get 18-20fps. I can then escape and recreate the exact same free flight and only get 11-12fps. I've removed tweeks, reset to default and set to different perameters, yet each time I think I've finally cracked it when I next boot up the game I seem to be back to square one. I am considering some hardware upgrades, an extra 1GB RAM for a start but am also considering ditching FSX and moving back to FS2002 just because I prefer to spend my time flying and not trying to rewrite FSX.cfg over and over again!Rob EnglandMy specs:Dual Core Intel P4 3.4GHZ1024MB DDR2 RAMNvidia 256MB 6200 Grpahics
