Operating the A320

Featured Replies

I have flown GA for about 17 hours since launch, but yesterday I tried the a320 on a short hop from Malta over to Libya. This is a part of my Norway to Cape of Good Hope trip that some of you might have read that I'm doing. Doing it in GA mostly, but the temptation was too great, and I had to try the bus out.

So what do I think about it after two short trips in the thing? Well, its definately default, but I think it flies rather nicely. I was surprised how they got the fly-by-wire to work as good as they did. Many addon developers through the years have struggled getting this right. The plane should auto-trim as you set your nose somewhere, and it actually does that pretty well. The plane feels too rocket-like on takeoff, and there are many things with the fmc that seems to be off. But the basic functionality is there, and it works. I didn't really have any glaring issues flying it; I got it up, got it to cruise, and got it down - all in one piece. On approach it felt supersmooth and stabile. The winds were calm, and it was a wonderful feeling landing it. Difficult to put into words, but I could feel the weight of it, but also the assistance from the fbw and automation.

Visually, both inside and out (but especially outside) it looks really good! It's a sweet little tubeliner that I no doubt will enjoy flying.

I should also mention that I'm a long time simmer with over 20 years of experience, and I own all the pmdg, fslabs and many of the a2a stuff. I didn't expect this to be study level. For what it is - an introduction into the a320 - it does a good job. It also is an inspiration for those of us who will be waiting for the Fslabs and PMDG. If Asobo can make it look and fly this good, Im gonna be mindblown when topnotch 3pd release their products for this sim!

I’ve flown only GA so far and I’m thinking the same as you an taking the bus for a short hop. Did you feel the need to change any of the sensitivity on your controls from the GA’s to the 320? I’ve got my controls adjusted heavily to stop some of that sensitivity.

My take on the 787's pretty much the same. The Quality Wings FSX/P3D one has more whistles and bells than this one, but it has enough to make it fun to fly. The MCP works as it should in all the ways which matter and it flies as you'd expect. I wasn't expecting it to be spectacular, but for a default airliner or inexpensive  payware one, if you want to regard it as that, since it only comes in the priciest version of the sim, it does the job.

Thats nice to hear.

I only had time for around 3 hours with the C152 Freeflight and the Tutorial Flights.

Works perfect for me so far.

Sorry folks in advance if my question is put to the wrong thread.

I'm very new to flight sim in general, I have used Aerofly2 in the passed which is very user friendly to say the least.

My question is around flight plans, for example I select a high altitude flight plan which includes various way points. do I then need to enter data into the MCDU?

the flight plan brings me to the airport but does not give me any indication of top of descent or does not align me with the runway for that matter.

any help would be appreciated.

If you use the flightplanner in the game menu (world globe, before you click "fly"), then all the waypoints will be already entered into your mcdu (a320 is the only one I've tested so far, but I guess it's the same on the 787 and 747). At least on the a320 you get a TOD arrow on the flightplan path on the pfd that shows you where it has calculated you should start decending. Whether or not this calculation is accurate is another topic.

Thank you Andreas, could you explain what he PFD is?

It is the primary flight displays, and the right one infront of you shows your flight path with a green line. That green line has a little white "tick" in it to indicate the TOC (top of climb) and TOD (top of descent).

The autothrottle still confuses me, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't know if it's me or the sim.

Now to wait for some livery packs.

Edit: Oh I'm a dumb dumb, it was my fault, I'm so used to the default FSX auto pilot, I didn't realize the real one (and MSFS) the throttle needs to be lowered into an auto throttle area.

Thank you Andrea's.

Good job! How did it go and feel?

Felt good, few mistakes with some AP features but I managed to find the airport approach!

EIDW - EGLL.

Trial and error! 😅
