A great XPlane feature found in MSFS...

Featured Replies

Many times, when flying XP over the years I really appreciated the one feature that FSX and P3D never implemented...that is..A.I. control of your airplane.   Sometimes,  when having a bite to eat, or poured myself a drink, would enjoy getting into a passenger cabin seat of any of my 3rdP purchased planes, usually with full graphic cabins, and plunk myself down as I do in real life, just aft of the wing on a window seat, and enjoyed doing that in XP.  I'd set up the flight...put myself into that seat, and then give control over to A.I.  Unfortunately, it wasn't a non-buggy implementation...whereby, the A.I. would end up crashing on landing, or other assorted mishaps, as I munched my dinner on my lap, etc.

Well, you have an A.I. co-pilot implementation in MSFS, and is engaged by the Ctrl-Alt-X key press sequence.  So...I decided to have breakfast upon the lap..and set up in the C172 G1000,  a flight between two airports 200 miles apart, two vacation centre airports.  I set up at GA small parking at the departure, and a GA spot at the destination.  MSFS then put me into that spot at the departure airport dead and cold.  At that moment I went to EXTERNAL VIEW on the camera...and then when I set up the angle for viewing the plane...being cold and dark,  I then pressed the Co-Pilot ,or in this case my virtual PIC, engagement keyboard sequence.  Well...what a treat...The A.I. pilot brought the plane alive..contacted ground for a push back, contacted the airfield for taxi clearance, got that..and started the taxi, all as I was feeding bacon and eggs into my face.  Taxi'ed to the active...got clearance at all stages upon the ground from A.T.C. and then took off...climbed to cruise, on course CDI,  and climbed to 7,500 feet ASL.  Cruised at that altitude, then getting clearance, descended into the pattern and landed at the destination airport. Then...cleared the runway after the declaration of such..and taxi'ed to the second GA small that I had set up in the WORLD flight set up screen.  At the destination,  a warder brought the plane to a halt.  Then..the A.I. co-pilot or actually the P.I.C.  went dark and cold.  What a hoot...here is the flight...all under A.I. from mid point in flight, to the final taxi and park at destination, .and worked without a single mishap or flaw...not of which you'd see for the most part, even today in XP11.x   This was as smooth as silk...with even all A.I. ATC interaction with the A.I. PIC.  Very impressed...and I got to eat my breakfast while it was hot...toast included!

Tsk tsk, landing on a closed runway!!

It's funny, all my years with XP10/11 I never once used this feature. Never thought to. I've already used it on 2 different occasions in MSFS in the last two days when I'd get frustrated because I hadn't set up my controls correctly and it worked like a dream, push back and all!!

Next I gotta try your tip, I'mma cram cake into my face while watching the AI attempt a 787 landing at Lukla in a storm 🍰

Yeah...I was surprised as well..the yellow X's...but that's Orillia Mara...and all this was under control of MSFS A.I.   No glitches...so I'm going to set up the 787, and try it with that...what a hoot..and lots of fun...but you have to make sure you have both a departure and arrival as well as where upon each property you shall start and end...plop down cold and dark...press the keyboard sequence...and have fun...enjoy your dinner and beer!  In XP, I used to put myself in the cabin, in the 727...and pretend I was just another paying passenger...but there were glitches...missed approaches...missed taxi...out-right CTD.  So the feature was very buggy.  This flight was flawless, and I was truly the virtual guy in the right seat...rubber necking!  With this sim, just another great perk that I am going to do...on a flight over the Great Wall of China!  A high wing, of course. For MSFS...I have plans...:)
