Approach Lighting - Sequential Flashing Strobes

Featured Replies

Hello, one thing I've noticed sticking out like a sore thumb is that approach lighting setups that include sequential flashing strobes leading in to the runway are visible from a very far away and also are visible from any angle, not just head on approaching the runway.  I don't *think* this is realistic for runways equipped with an ALSF or SSALR approach lighting setup (not to be confused with an ODALS system), I think these lead in strobes would only be visible when facing the runway (give or take some number of degrees) and not from 15-20 miles out?  I'd be interested in getting confirmation that I'm correct in my assumptions before I start submitting these as bugs to Asobo.  Looking at this website would seem to confirm that as the flashers do not appear to be omnidirectional.

Thanks

Current System (Running at 4k): ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F, Ryzen 7800X3D, RTX 5090, 55" Samsung Q80T, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, EVGA CLC 280mm AIO Cooler, Brunner CLS-E NG Yoke, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS & Stick, Thrustmaster TCA Quadrant & Add-on, VirtualFly Ruddo+, TQ6+ and Yoko+, GoFlight MCP-PRO and EFIS, Skalarki FCU and MCDU

The only thing I can tell you for certain is that the approach lighting for RWYs 18C and 18R at KMEM  (both listed as MALSR) can be seen from nearly 90 degrees off and about ten miles away - especially with high humidity.  I wouldn't call it a bug myself but Im not a pilot nor an approach lighting expert 🙂

You are absolutely right. In real life the only thing you can see from distance is rotation beacon. I won't see taxiway light until you over trash hold . And approach light come to view very close to missed approach point. I know XP11 also has the same probelm.

This is not the best quality, but 6 ago I mounted camera on the wing. Runway is dark spot until you get close
