Don't log out!

Featured Replies

Yesterday, I was a little tired of seeing the "Player[insert long random number]" ID that Microsoft had assigned to me. I wanted to rename my ID to March Hare. So I did, within my Microsoft Xbox account (although I don't have an Xbox), via a web browser. Great (although it's still attached a random number to the end, which displays within the sim, because there must be thousands of imitators out there - how dare they!)

Anyhow, I thought the sim might pick up on the name change when I reloaded it. No. Okay, not an issue. Log out of my Microsoft account within the sim then log back in. Logged out, check. It automatically takes me to the start-up screen and says, "Let's get you logged in to your account", with a nice login button to press. Yes, please! But-- What's this? I can't click the login button with my mouse pointer. I can't press anything on the keyboard, either.

Right, we have a crash. Restart the sim. "Let's get you logged in to your account." Okay, let's do that this time! And so I--

Oh, it still won't let me click that button, or press any keys to make something happen. Haha. This is fun.

Restart Steam this time. Nope. The same.

Restart the PC. No.

Change the way I log in to Windows so that I'll already be logged into my Microsoft account before I even launch the sim. Haha! I've got you now, you rascally sim!

Er. No.

Crying a little bit inside now.

Press every button on the keyboard one at a time.

Sobbing now (still on the inside).

Relaunch and press random ctrl + shift + other key combinations together.

Hey! Windowed mode! Not sure how I did that. But suddenly I can click that button and type in my account details!

The moral being, don't log out. Ever. Be happy with what you have.

Seriously, though, that was a lot of hassle. I guess if I hadn't been running the game in full screen mode, I would have been fine, because obviously why should you be able to log back into your account if you're running full screen?

Wow.

For this part i'd assume you pressed Alt + Enter whilst in the process of examining every button available to you.  😁

No doubt you're right. I was just kind of mashing in the end.

I honestly thought it was game over (sorry, sim over). It was an unnecessarily frustrating situation, and not an obvious solution to what should never have been an issue.

I wonder if it only happens launching via Steam, not the Microsoft Store version. But I wouldn't advise anyone to test it, just in case logging back in is even more broken on the Store version 😉

Heartbreaking post. Glad you were able to recover. Your description was very visceral.

Oh, I was relieved beyond words. I thought it was time to dig out my pitchfork and light up a torch, to go marching down to Microsoft's mansion.

It's a variation on "Press any key to continue."  In this case it was "Press EVERY key to continue!" 😄
