How to CORRECTLY apply future MSFS Patches/Updates?

Featured Replies

Howdy,

In reality, this process should be fully outlined by MS/AS, but until that happens, we need to establish best practices and make those practices easy to find in these forums (as opposed to getting buried within the next 15 minutes). Since the update is automatic, individuals MAY need to make adjustments BEFORE they run MSFS.

What is the official process for updating the sim?

  • Do we need to clean out the community folder?
    • If so, what about purchased content installed through the marketplace? Can we just cut all of the content from the community folder, and place it in a backup folder?
    • Once the update is applied, we can paste the content back into the community folder keeping in mind that some of the content may not be compatible?
  • Does Dev mode have to be disabled before the update?
    • I have read in other posts that updating while Dev mode is active can cause issues

What other things need to be done before the update and after the update? I know some of this is already mentioned, but it would be great if we could compile a few bullets for people to use a a checklist while updating.

This thread has additional information, and I'm particularly interested in Rob Ainscough's first post.

to be fair..  M/S post this with all thier updates...

Do I need to do anything with add-ons in the community folder?

While most of the time it is safe to leave files in the community folder, backing up files is never a bad idea. This can be done easily by moving the content from your community folder to a temporary location on your hard drive before applying the patch, and replacing after testing the new version.
