October 11, 20205 yr Hi, Apologies if the answer to this is somewhere easy to find. But I can't find it! Say I am on an IFR flight into an airport and looking at the WX I decide I want to request a visual approach (circle to land) -how would I go about this? Thanks, James James W
October 11, 20205 yr Commercial Member Cancel your IFR flight plan and call tower for VFR Pattern entry would be one way. If you're still with approach control, you could cancel IFR and call tower with the standard VFR call something like <CallSign> is 5 miles southwest inbound for landing" and then get the pattern entry instructions. October 11, 20205 yr Author Is that something that would be done on a commercial flight IRL? I've seen a few videos of 737 pilots flying visual approaches, but never really knew how that works in the framework of an IFR flight. James W
October 11, 20205 yr Commercial Member You can request a visual straight-in or vectors to a visual straight-in. In real life, the controller, on a VFR day, is likely having them fly a defined arrival pattern or giving them vectors to final. Then handing them over to tower to get landing clearance. The closest to this in P2A is to request vectors to a visual straight-in. If you're flying a STAR, you can make the request as you approach the last waypoint in the STAR. Dave
October 11, 20205 yr Author Thanks Dave, I'll give that a try. I presume the verbage would be 'tower request straight in visual to runway x' ? James W
October 11, 20205 yr Commercial Member No, it needs to be "Tower <CallSign> request visual straight-in to runway xx". visual straight-in is the key phrase. Once approved, it will be up to you to get on final and fly the straight-in. This will not get you any vectors. Dave Edited October 11, 20205 yr by Dave-Pilot2ATC
