January 23, 200719 yr >We haven't talked about sending fighters and helicopters to>get in your way. Haven't even thought about trying to shoot>you down - that is a pretty serious decision and only three>people in the US can authorize that one - we probably wouldn't>have anything to shoot you down with anyway (off SOCAL).>Good info. You know I think the above policy should be changed in light of terrorism and all of that. I mean, a ship should have the ability to defend itself, and the chain-of-command should allow for that decision to be made by the CO. I hope that is the case...Furthermore, I think a ship ought to be capable of defending itself no matter if it's in the Persian Gulf or off San Diego.:) Well, if I were Sec of the Navy, I would want those rules put in practice...RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
January 23, 200719 yr Thanks for your insight, Reggie, very informative, you raise some points on this hypothetical scenario, I'd never really considered until now.Still, as a sim pilot, that was a challenging mission for me in FSX, indeed I think it should have been a level higher than what Aces rated it in FSX. I managed some of the expert missions first time round, this one took quite a few attempts and had to cheat by not waiting for the the engine to fail before I went for the final approach on the deck before I managed it.I'm not sure what speed the carrier is doing in the sim? but it seems pretty quick.Murmur ... As for best PC based simulation landing experiences, I was going to say the Pacific Fighter stuff as well, that can be quite difficult too, but for one reason or another, never really been able to get into it, even though I did not too bad flying it online in combat at Hyperlobby. One thing I have discovered though, the carrier landing experience in FSX can be quite intense, over and above what was provided with FS9 and its add-ons, so hopefully this might be one area in FSX where add-on company's can provide folk like me with more challenges.
February 20, 200719 yr Way back when I was a full-time CFI at LGB (now KLGB) we would practice over the harbour, where quite often, there would be Navy "Jeep Carriers" anchored (never one the big ones). Every once in a while, I would simulate a engine failure, and have the student set up for a landing on the deck of one of the carriers. Of course, I would break off the approach at about 500 ft. It was never a problem then, but man-o-man I wouldn't try that today!
