P3D v4.5 rebooting with Kernel Power 41 Error

Featured Replies

P3D v4.5 reboots after about 10 minutes of flying with a Kernel Power 41 error. I have tried all the troubleshooting I have been able to find on the web without success – including AVSIMs excellent CTD Guide; and MS Windows Advanced troubleshooting for Event ID 41.

The reboot events were not been captured by AppCrashView and Event ID 41 entry lists error code values of zero, indicating that the system hasn't had time to record the error. My CPU is not overclocked, BIOS is up to date, RAM has been checked and passed, all drivers are up to date, there are no overheating components, and the PSU wattage at 600 is ample for my system, according to OuterVision's power supply calculator. System specifications are:

  • HP Envy Phoenix 800-002a | CPU Intel Core i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz | Motherboard HP 2AF3 v1.0 | RAM 2 x 8 GB DDR3 | BIOS AMI 80.24 24/10/2014 | PSU DPS-600WB A | OS MS Windows 10 Home (64 bit) Version 10.0.19042 | Graphics: ASUS Radeon RX 580 Series – Driver Version 27.20.14501.28009 9 Dec 2020 | VRAM 8GB GDDR5 | Drives are internal Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB for OS and system files; internal 3TB HDD for documents, Orbx library and scenery files (76 files) plus other P3D add-ons; and an external WD SSD 25F3 512GB USB Device for P3d v4.5.

I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled P3D v4.5 and all the Orbx files. The only other add-ons I have (all of which were reinstalled) are FlyTampa YSSY, Traffic Global Early Access 1.1.2.0, NextGen Simulations Citation CJ4X v2, Carenado EMB505 Phenom 300, Virtualcol FS - Embraer 190-195 Regional Pack, and REX SkyForce 3D and REX Environment Force.

I only experience the Kernel Power 41 reboots in P3D. I started experiencing issues with P3D – mainly CTDs – after installing the Radeon graphics card to replace a low end card that came with the PC. I suspect that this is the source of my problems but have run out of avenues for solutions. I even went back to installing the driver that came with the card. Short of replacing the graphics card, are there any other options I should follow? All advice gratefully received and thankfully applied.

I've seen this error a lot with overclocked systems. Sometimes because the processor voltage is not high enough.

I suspect in your case it is the power supply...if the only change was the addition of a new graphic card, it's very possible that your 600W power supply is not making enough juice. When P3D starts, the graphics card starts drawing more power and then the CTD.

Here is a Microsoft doc describing possible causes.

Good luck with your troubleshooting.

My MSFS 2020 repaints: Flightsim.to - Profile of HStreet

Working on MSFS 2024 versions.

Also you the VRM on your motherboard could be failing and not supplying stable power to the CPU.

PSU could be about to fail?

Try a 650 Watt or better 700 watt to have CTD safety margin.

Modern 3XXX GPU's that no one can buy require 850 Watt (RTX 3080) or better 1000 Watt (RTX 3090) to be stable (No CTD issues). RTX 3070 mightn't CTD with a 750 Watt.

It's a known (Google) fact that they overdraw power.

Just my 2 cents worth as other people here have these cards.

Thanks for the reply Yurei. I followed Microsoft's advice in that link before I posted to this forum. OuterVision estimated my system required 420W, so I figured a 600W PSU was ample. I've now seen other advice that the PSU should run at 50% of its rated capacity for max efficiency, so that means having a 850W PSU. That will be my last resort :).

Thanks exeodus. I'll test the motherboard vrm and if that's OK I'll replace the PSU.
