A Chippie over Welshpool....

Featured Replies

In my previous post, I'd alluded to (CBFS) Rick Piper's HS-748, although, that was not the SIM plane, I'd illustrated there. But, as I now recall, another of Rick's plane, the de Havilland Chipmunk was likely one of the (very) first aircraft (freeware or payware), I'd flown in the SIM. I was flying that little plane quite a bit in my early (SIM) days, (hard to believe >16 years have passed since), and, therefore, I wished to fly it, one more time today. Couple of things, to note about the Chipmunk (affectionately known as "Chippie"):

  1. The Chipmunk holds a special place in aviation history, being the first (true) postwar aviation project of de Havilland "Canada" (the small "upstart" company that was founded in 1928). So, the Chipmunk was DHC #1 (DHC-1). We know that de Havilland had named its light aircraft after different species of "insects", moth/mosquito etc. (Geoffrey de Havilland was also a keen "entomologist", besides being an aircraft design pioneer). De Havilland Canada, starting with Chipmunk, would then continue the tradition by naming their aircraft after animals (next in line, was DHC #2, Beaver, a perennial favorite of ours, around, here). DHC's first six aircraft were named after animals indigenous to Canada. The next two, aircraft in the series, however, disrupted everything and broke the tradition...🙂...been unconventionally named, “Dash 7” and “Dash 8”,...Oh well...they are also excellent planes, nonetheless,...
  2. The de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk, the tandem, two-seat, single-engined primary trainer aircraft was the standard primary trainer for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), Royal Air Force (RAF) and several other air forces through much of the post-WW II years. In this post, I've chosen a Royal Canadian Air Force paint (RCAF 671), for my images, below. Plus, I'm a bit of fan of any livery in "Yellow"...(speaking of Yellow, besides the classic Yellow Cub, Braniff's lemon Yellow, Hughes Airwest's flying banana, TUI fly's distinctive Yellow, and Spirit's bold Yellow etc. come to mind...). Anyway, if you wish to see a few great-looking (RW) pictures of this (exact) same aircraft, as in this post, please search for "Images of G-BNZC / RCAF-671 | De Havilland DHC-1".

Next a bit about the locale, for this post. I always find it interesting and enjoyable, to fly/examine any Airport Scenery, at least 2-3 times, so as to be able to explore and enjoy all its details and contents. It's especially true for Orbx's small town airports, which always include lots of "small" but interesting curiosities, and typically includes a good dose of the adjacent terrain too. I'd (recently) explored the Wales Airport (Welshpool/EGCW/also known as Mid-Wales Airport), and I've been meaning to go back to that picturesque little airport, one more time, so I've done so, here, this time, in Rick's Chipmunk, mostly in the vicinity and skies above it, located in the beautiful Severn valley and on the edge of some of the most stunning open flying country anywhere in the UK...

So, hope you enjoy these images, below, of Welshpool, as I re-visit it, here. I've shown samples from the surrounding areas and skies, in various lighting conditions of dawn/day/dusk. Moreover, in my previous post, I'd not got to land on the Airport's Rwy, (EGCW has one Asphalt Rwy (04/22) of length 3,346 ft, see one overhead screenshot), so, I've done a bit of an experiment, here, to land on Rwy 22, after dusk, without the availability/aid of any (local) navaids, but just using my (trusty) Synthetic ILS (LOC/GS) needles, on the final, see screenshots (e.g. at DME 2.7 and 0.9 on the gauge). I did manage to land perfectly on the centerline of Rwy 22...thanks to this wonderful gauge...

[Final note: As I (gingerly) approached the (airport) parking space, in my plane, I caught sight of the Burner flame (the propeller/engine of the hot air balloon - see the left one of the two balloons) flaring up, in front of me. And, then, also, for curiosity, I turned the time to "daylight", and, there, I spotted..."the damsel-in-distress"...🙂...that some of you might recall, from my previous visit to this Airport...(look farther out towards RHS from my plane). Unfortunately, it seems like, the (gallantly promised) help....🙂...has not yet arrived...since my last visit...!]

If perchance, you're referring to me, the young lady blew me out (a slang term for being rejected, nothing salacious!) - She only likes men taller that 6 feet. I'm only 5'11"

EDIT - I've flown in a Chipmunk 4 times - 3 times as a cadet in the Air Training Corps and the fourth time was when I went back to my old squadron as a civilian instructor for a while.

[Yes, Mark, I gathered something like that....🙂...regarding the rescue...especially when I recall you'd offered your (own) executive transport turboprop plane...just for the mission...]

Wow...so good to hear of your RW experience with the Chipmunk, but, I'm not surprised, the plane was such a popular trainer....and, thanks for tolerating my "wannabe" (Chipmunk Pilotage) skills here...🙂...

No tolerating necessary good sir! You at least got to land your Chippie in one piece. I said I had flown in a Chippie, not actually landed one (it would not have been pretty!! )
