VSync and Frame limiting - has advice changed?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I know various  tweaks of Rivatuner and Nvidia control panel have been suggested - avoiding the in built Vsync  /FPS limiter. But has anything changed? If anything I'm getting a better experience limiting Vsync/FPS to 30 in game now rather than with Riva or Nvidia CP.

Any thoughts/advice since all the latest patches/updates?

Thanks!

Excellent.  This requires some experimentation then, and may be different for different set-ups.  I can't wait to experiment with a few things later.

PS. Yes, Asobo changed how it sends frames to the screen.  It is supposed to cut down on that time so I suppose it could give an FPS increase to some.  I lock at 30 though, so not much use to me, but maybe it will take some load of the GPU or at least help consistency.  I will see.

I am sure the community will figure out the best way to go over the next few days.

Call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind, but I prefer Rob.

Ticking vsync in MSFS seems to work in similar fashion to half refresh rate.  For me in particular if I’m in a densely populated area like New York and frames are getting hammered, setting my monitor in NCP to 30hz and setting frames to 60 hz and ticking Vsync in MSFS gives very smooth performance because it effectively has locked my frames down to 30.  Although I downloaded the update yesterday, I haven’t flown around to see if it still works this way.

After the update last night I immediately noticed screen tearing, routinely since launch I have VSYNC off, enabled VSYNC problem gone which I thought was strange.  So something has definitely changed during the update.

While I had set Vsync to 60 with my 30Hz monitor and got solid 30fps with no stutters, pre-patch Vsync 30/20 would reduce the frames to half/third resulting in a stutterfest. Now I can set 60/30/20 with no effect on the framerate ( always 30fps with VSync on) which wouldn't bother me much had I not acquired microstutters with all settings. Changing VSync settings in NVidia CP has no effect on the stutters. Anyone else seeing this?
