Still trying to find the holy FPS grail

Featured Replies

I am still trying to find the holy FSX fps grail and I am not sure, if I am the only one who still tries to squeeze out a few more fps, because at my settings of "Medium-Low" to "Medium-High" with normal autogen and 30% MyTrafficX, I can get only about an average of 15fps, which is not enough for me to enjoy flying.I tried all fsx.cfg fixes, my harddrive is totally optimized and defragged, applied autogen patches, texture compression, use EndItAll to shut down everything, no unecessary startup programs, latest drivers - everything is a go. My biggest boost came from the fiber and autogen tweaks, but... it's still not enough. I need at least 20fps on any occasion, especially for landing.I chose "Medium-Low" to "Medium-High", because everything below that setting won't be an improvement over my highly-tweaked and addon'ed FS9 for me. However, I really want to start using FSX, because of the new "internals", like flight dynamics, thermals, weather, G-1000, etc.So, it is still the verdict for now that FSX is best sock-drawered until the long-awaited patch comes out? Is there any official info about performance improvements (especially dual-core support) at all? Phil Taylor's weblog states only "performace enhancements" without going into a lot of detail.I do want to give FSX a chance, but at this point I just cannot enjoy it, especially when I see my 4800X2 being highly under-utilized. I somehow feel like I am trying to drive a Ferrari on a dirt road.My setup: 4800X2, 2GB Corsair XPS DDR400, 7600GT, E-mu 0404. Pat

Double check the "threaded optimization" is on in your cards nvidia settings.Mine got turned off some how and it took 2 days to catch it.Do not feel bad. There are alot of us with high end systems seeing mid to low teens especially around cities even with the tweeks and moderate game settings.I can go to Alaska, crank everything up to max and stay in the high 20s-30s. Get near a city and it dives to sometimes the low teens. The autogen/buildings need to be examined and redone as something is wrong IMO.

Don't bother. I even have faster system than yours, which is even very well over 40% overclocked (speed-wise), which even shows in games and in FS9, and FSX, and I still can't get some decent performance no matter what.I am also all about smoothness and decent FPS (30+ in FSX case), and now I invested $1000 into my new machine, FS9 never looked or performed better, while FSX is still unusable.I'd say one of most important things for me in FSX is improved flight dynamics (which I hope will be better on PMDG 747 in FSX, I am not talking about MS aircraft, those are crap anyway...) and new VC smoothness which really adds to overall immersion (smooth yoke and throttle movement and head latency). I personally couldn't care less about bloom though... A big repair from FS9 are the terrain textures - there is no more texture-cross.So, I guess that FSX stays for me too sockdrawered until the patch, and I really REALLY hope they bring at least 100% performance boost with this patch, otherwise it will be completely useless.Oh yeah, Ferrari on a dirt road - LOL! :) Kinda reminds me when I took an SLK for a ride, through the mountains on some curvy road, and then got almost stranded on one dirt road that came inbetween, sliding almost from the road hehehehe...

Whoa, the "threaded optimization" setting gave me a very good fps boost. I am currently flying in the Learjet with (default, not tweaked) autogen and scenery complexity maxed out at 20-25fps (with 40% traffic). Before it was around 15. Needless to say that it looks stunning. That must have been the most useful tweak that I have seen in a long time. Right now the only tweak that I have used is the FIBER fsx.cfg setting - the rest is default + MyTrafficX. Haven't installed AS6 yet, but I am impressed.I also let FSX control the AA+AF at recommendation from MS and have it "Application controlled" on the nVidia Control Center. Thanks a lot for that very useful setting! *hug*Pat

Pardon my stupidity, but where is the setting for "threaded optimization" on/off. I have a GeForce FX 5600 256 card with the latest driver ver 93.71 installed and I cannot find this setting in the Nivdia control panel. I have tweaked and tweaked all the config settings for FSX and as most posts I have seen, cannot get the FPS up to an acceptable level for running FSX. At this point, I am hanging on for the upcoming patch rather than re-installing FS9. Unfortunately, I un-installed FS9 and all the add-ons I had. Thanks!

I am not sure, but it could be that it is for more modern nVidia chipsets? On my setup, I can find it in my custom profile for FSX in the nVidia Control Panel where the AA+AF is set. Never noticed it before either. I'll try to post a screenshot tomorrow.

I have a 7900GT and don't have that 'threaded optimisation' either...is it an exclusive AMD dual-core option maybe?

Wow I am glad that worked well for you. I was going to tell you, that with a 4800+ you should be doing better than that.I mean, if all you can get is 15 fps with your 4800+, you might as well go out and buy a $90 cpu like mine, because it is outperforming yours. Now that you're getting 20-25+, you are more in line with what I get.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2530 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian

I have actually turned OFF the internal AA (but Trilinear ON)in FSX because this can cause the FPS to drop dramatically when viewing at a vertical angle above the aircraft on the runway on my system and can also cause stuttering in steep approaches above the runway when in the cockpit. I posted a separate thread on this some time ago. I've set my 7900GT to AA=2x and AF=2x and things work great now. I don't agree with the MS advice on this for internal control - well certainly not in my case.AMD 4200+ 2X 7900GT in SLI mode 2 Gigs mem.Re WOZ

Here it is:http://www.ioxo.net/temp/threaded_optimization.jpgIn the nVidia Control Panel select "3D Settings", select "Adjust image settings with preview", select "Use the Advanced 3D Image settings" and click "Take me there". Finally adjust your settings for fsx.exe. That's it!Good luck!

Right now I am trying 92.41 release from Gigabyte and that option doesn't show. I will have to try the newest nVidia drivers.Thanks.

driver v93.71 here

Whoa I have 93.71 and I've never seen that. I will have to check.Does this 'thread optimization' thing help with single core cpu's? Is this threading ops withing the gpu itself, or is this something related to the cpu?RhettAMD 3700+ (@2530 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian
