I rented a plane a few times out of Essex County KCDW some years ago and stayed away from NYC area. I flew one of those days out over Rutgers where I went to college, but the thought of getting anywhere near NYC was not pleasant. I did got out near Suffern too which has some nice rolling hills though. That said, I did my flight training 8 miles west of KORD, and flying out over the Chicago Lakefront is fantastic. The key is to go through the Midway class C airspace or you will have some unhappy O’Hare controllers.

Yah, if you land and the ATC gives you three numbers to call after landing, you won't get away with it unless your name is H.F...
