TCA Airbus Thottle "USB Device Over Current" warning

Featured Replies

Hi,

When connecting the TCA Airbus Joystick and Throttle quadrant, the PC automatically shuts down and when I try and restart with the devices connected, I get a "USB Device Over Current" error message and the PC shuts down. All other USB devices work fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ben

Does it do this no matter which usb port it is plugged in to? Is it plugged directly into the pc or via a hub? Can you test on another pc to rule out the device?

Chris

Sounds like the USB port it's connected to is faulty and is drawing more current than it should, which could damage the device or the PC, which is why it's shutting down.

If it's a USB port on the motherboard then you may have a fault there. If it's a USB hub then I would replace it straight away. If it happens on multiple USB ports (and in particular, if it happens on both motherboard ports and hub ports) then it could be one of the TCA devices that has a fault. It could be a problem with your PSU delivering more current on one of its 5V rails than it ought to due to a faulty voltage regulator. It could be lots of hardware faults, in fact.

In any event, this should never happen normally and it's not a software issue, it's a hardware one that you should get fixed before something is damaged permanently. If you're not technical then I recommend taking the PC to a repair shop (but a good one that won't rip you off!).

On a side note, we're lucky with USB3 that they implemented overcurrent protection; back in the old days, this would just have zapped your computer or device and that would have been the end of it!

(Oh, and without diverting the thread too much... @tutmeister, I just had a look at your Web site; the yoke product looks awesome. I have a PFC yoke which looks fairly similar and was rather less, erm, value for money, but I like the look of yours very much. Any plans to potentially add / enable force feedback?)

Thanks Neil, no plans yet for force feedback as the aim is to keep the price down while providing the best desktop yoke/controls available. FFB would increase the price hugely. Next products are more yoke handles, throttles etc. If we ever runout of products then it may get added but we are talking a good number of years.

Start by unplugging the device and ensure that the PC starts up OK with no recurrence of the error.

Assuming that went OK, closely inspect the USB port and the USB plug for debris, foreign objects, or pin/contact damage.  Make sure the cable has not been crimped and does not show other signs of damage.

If plugging it back in reproduces the error, try it again on a different port.  If it reoccurs there, you likely have a serious fault in the joystick electronics somewhere, and it's time to run the warranty gauntlet.
