I’m looking for something to help me improve my flying skills in MSFS. Better circuits would be one thing and some VOR nav challenges. Is FSFlyingSchool any good for this? Any feedback on this software and any good alternatives would be welcome. https://www.fsflyingschool.com 

I fly VR only btw.

Hello Phil,

Anything that motivates you to actually practice precision circuits will work just fine.  Make some notes for the speeds, headings and altitude goals and the proper configuration and keep your specs close.  Monitor your progress and keep trying until you have zero errors.  This can be very satisfying if you stick with it.  I tried FS Flying School some years ago and it gets very irritating with the constant nags, but,, the advantage for me was you could start an approach or restart to a landing in an instant.

After some time in the same plane you will find that maintaining the precise attitude is much easier than chasing the airspeed and altimeter needles.  Also practice smoothness - precision is the key.  Taxi with the nose wheel exactly on the yellow line and on takeoff roll and touch down make sure you are dead center of the runway centerline.  Make smooth and graceful turns at exactly the correct bank angle and smoothly roll out of each turn on the correct heading. 50 foot altitude and 5 degrees heading errors should be your maximum allowed.  Later on maybe 20 foot altitude and 2 degrees heading errors.  All touchdowns should be greasers.  Tell yourself your flying buddies are watching every landing.

Remember if you land gear up it will take full power to taxi.

I have been practicing flying from Meribel in the French Alps to Chourchvel using a slightly different route and altitude to and from. (Orbx black Friday sale) This is basically from one side of a mountain to the other at different altitudes. Speed, headings, and attitude are very similar to practicing circuits, but, the view is ever changing.

Try FSAcademy.  They have a lesson package for IFR, and another lesson package for VFR.  And you can also buy the FSAcademy lessons via the MSFS marketplace, or their website: https://www.fsacademy.co.uk/.

Thanks Ray. That's a great post (as usual) and includes so many things I do with mediocrity at best. If I had something that graded all these things and gave feedback I could act on I think it would motivate me to get them all just right.

I've had FS Flying school for a few sims and found myself not using it that much. That's not to say that it's not a good product. But, I think that now I'll get FS Academy for both VFR and IFR to refresh and brush up a bit.

The Bush trips look interesting to me and the VFR manual is awesome:

I'm flying the first VFR lesson as I type and it appears to be a great way to learn (or re-learn) all that I should have known along the years.

Mark says at the end that "it won't correct you if you make a mistake". Does that mean that FS Academy won't say that I'm too high above the glide slope or point out any other errors or score me on my landing?

I just completed the first two lessons and could do with a little more commentary. I did expect more corrections. For instance, I followed the river in the wrong direction and was only told to watch speed and/or altitude. I had to figure out that I was going the wrong way. Also, there was no comment after the landing except to take the next right. So, that is something that I would have to say is missing.

Also, there is nothing to indicate when a lesson has been completed. I'd like to see both a score and the fact that I completed a lesson.

Hi.  FS Academy may sometimes not correct all your mistakes.  

If FS Academy stops making remarks and you feel you are off course, you can always watch the Youtube videos of someone who completed the lesson.  This way, you will know where you went wrong.
