Any app to edit COM frequencies in MSFS?

Featured Replies

Is there an app available to edit MSFS airport COM frequencies?  I have been compiling at this time a short list of ATIS frequencies in MSFS that are either errors or not up to date with frequencies published by FAA and Jep.  I believe most are just errors. An example is KHUF, Terre Haute, Indiana.  The real ATIS frequency in use is 127.50 and has been for years.  I verified 127.50 with the airport today.  MSFS is using 124.75.  It may be that it is doubled up with another nearby airport as tuning 124.75 finds ATIS broadcasts alternating for two airports.  If that is the case the other airport is a much smaller one.  Others I have found include KFDK Frederick, Maryland; and KPRB Parkersburg, West Virginia.  I have found a number of others over the past few months but have just now begun logging them.

I would guess its in the airport files or navdata.  There seems to be an alpha version of ADE over at FS developer.

I am using Navigraph so doubt it is in the NAV data.  I believe it is in the airports.  I just completed some digging around and found the 124.175 frequency MSFS is using for Terre Haute is the AWOS frequency for the nearby, much much smaller airport 3I3 (3 india 3) - Sky King airport.  In MSFS the actual frequency of 127.50 for KHUF stays silent.  The 124.75 for Sky King alternates reporting metar for 3I3 and KHUF.

No way to determine that from charts.  The only way is to use MSFS ATC features to check nearest airports and find the frequency MSFS is incorrectly using for the more major airport.

I'd like to be able to edit them as I find them.

For freqs just use airnav or sky vector

https://skyvector.com/airport/3I3/Sky-King-Airport

Ryan, believe you are not understanding.  As you suggest I am using Skyvector and Fltplan.com to look up frequencies.  Have done so for years.  The issue is that MSFS is not using those published frequencies for some airports.  MSFS appears to be grouping airports in a vicinity and at least sometimes using a frequency for one and erroneously applying that frequency to surrounding airports instead of what is published for those surrounding airports.   And in three I have investigated tonight, MSFS is using the AWOS frequencies for some very small airports and applying those to more significant nearby regional airports. I can look up and use the frequency for the affected regional airports all I want.  The radio stays silent.

Position yourself at KHUF, KFDK, or KPKB and tune their published weather frequencies and you will see. Silence!  There are a number of others that I have failed to log.

Oh.  The entire ATC system is supposed to undergo a revamp.  Maybe by WT - I believe it was mentioned in a Asobo Q and A but I might be imaging that.  It's not worth doing any work on from our end imo.  I don't even use it because of how awful it is.  They still don't show airport beacons unless you have flown over the airport already.  What I mean is, approach a new airport and you won't see the beacon to very close to it.

It's not too difficult to fix them at an airport using the SDK, but fixing all of the airports would be a real pain.

Would you please explain?  How can I do that with the SDK?

Apologies, Frank. I missed this earlier.

The short version is that you need to create an airport project in the SDK, and then edit the airport's .XML file to add in the various frequencies. They haven't gotten around to adding an interface to the scenery editor to allow this to be done through the GUI.

I haven't tried creating an airport project only for changing or adding frequencies without making any other changes to the airport, but I have created a project that only added a single object to an airport that worked fine and left the rest of the airport untouched. I would imagine that if I had not added that object, I could have only added com or nav frequencies to the .XML and compiled it. I'll try that as soon as I get some free time. Maybe someone reading this has done that already? If nothing else, create the project, add some small default MS object to the airport somewhere and then add the frequencies to the compiled airport.

Here's a thread on FSdeveloper about how it is actually done.

i9-10850K, ASUS TUF GAMING Z490-PLUS (WI-FI), 32GB G.SKILL DDR4-3603 / PC4-28800, GIGABYTE RTX5080 16GB WF OC 3 FAN running 3440x1440

I did a quick test. I opened the SDK, created a new airport project, and used KESN for the ICAO. I made 1 change in scenery editor. I highlighted the airport, and ticked the box next to "deleteAllFrequencies" in the "Deletes" section (info here). I then saved the airport and closed the project. I left everything right where it sat and then opened up the airport's .XML file in Notepad++ and added the frequencies and then saved the file. I went back to the SDK, reopened the project, and did a "build package". I closed the project, and then copied the package to my community folder and restarted the sim. After starting up a flight at Easton, the correct frequencies were shown in the menu.

Here is the entire airport .XML file. I added the lines in red. Everything else is what the scenery editor built.

    </Airport>
</FSData>

Additional note. ATIS showed up in the ATC menu as "EASTON ATIS". Ground and Clearance simply said "ground" and "clearance" with the correct frequencies listed for each. I think there's a bug causing the type to be displayed in the menu instead of the name.
