February 28, 20224 yr Hello, mid star ATC decided to vector me to the ILS runway (I guess due to a stiff angle between the STAR and the ILS) FINE! But I wish they gave me a heads up. I came in very high and had to go around as missed approach. For the future how do I know what’s the ATC plan so I can descend accordingly? Here is an image from the star vs vector by atc. :
February 28, 20224 yr you don't need to mention the airport / arrival / approach ..... we'll make a guess !!! for now, cheers john martin

February 28, 20224 yr the image suggests the JOVEM arrival (KDFW North flow) to a R18L approach ????? for now, cheers john martin

What does it matter if it’s 18L or 17L? the question is regarding how can prepare next time when ATC does this vectors again. They cleared me to follow the STAR and all of the sudden vector me to the runway while I didn’t get a chance to lose enough altitude.

Firstly, one would note that the JOVEM (north flow) and parallel VKTRY (south flow) arrivals have lengthy transitions ...... with ATC assignment some 30-40 mins before touchdown ..... and both requiring vectors to the respective approach procedure. One has the impression you & ATC were not expecting the south flow arrival as the winds earlier had "northerly" headwinds. A guess is that in that time from STAR assignment to passing VKTRY on descent at about 15000', there was a wind change (which may have been suggested in the TAF), hence the change to a south flow. If vectors began as suggested on the image before VKTRY, a 30 fpa descent should have been possible to JAYCI (?) Next time .... well there is no clear "rule", just expect the possibles. for now, cheers john martin
March 2, 20224 yr For me, I would say that the problem arises when the ATC ask you to descend via the arrival and then mid-arrival ask you to follow vectors. For instance, in the Airbus, you can now only select open descend or descend via ft/min. Not descend via profile, which is what the "descend via the arrival" is suppose to do.
