How to make Case PWR button not turn off PC?

Featured Replies

Weird question - my previous rig's PWR button required me to push and hold it before it would turn the entire PC off.

My current one - just a simple press of the button and poof - it turns off.  This is bad because sometimes my baby walks over and presses it lol.

Is there a way I can configure what the PWR button will do?  Is this a BIOS thing?

Go to contol panel, POWER OPTIONS, at left, choose what the power do and select your choice.

Power Options will enable you to not turn off the PC or go into sleep etc, but it wont allow you to require just a long press to turn off.

Mine does the same thing.

In Power Options, you can set the display to turn off when you press the button and then long press required to shut down completely. That means your naughty baby will just switch off your display when the button is hit. You can then switch back on the display easily.

From what I understand, in times gone by, we were always told that we must shut down the PC from within the OS and that it was bad to just hit the power button on the case. These days, the off button is smarter and a signal is sent to the OS to shut down safely. Hence why a single press is the norm now rather than a long press for safety. A long press though will bypass the OS and just shut down the PSU, in emergencies we all have needed to do it, usually without issue, but a long press shouldn't be a regular habit.

Personally, despite a single press now being regarded as safe, I still prefer to shut down via the OS.

Don't turn off at the PSU Ryan. Windows wont have shut down cleanly.

Shut down via Start/Power in Windows so you get a clean shutdown.

If you use the Power Button: One short press on the power button shuts down cleanly. One long press on the power button shuts down by telling the PSU to turn off, so isn't a clean shutdown.

If I were you I'd set the button to just switch off  the monitor. That way if your daughter hist the button, you just have to hit the space bar to turn the display back on.
